My dog pulled my parents laptop off of the table and now it won't boot. It says disc read error and then an option to reboot. I'm guessing its the hard drive, which just needs to be replaced. Any way to make sure?
A way to make sure is trying to reinstall the operating system or running some harddrive diagnostic programs. Although it sounds like the harddrive has failed, just get a new one.
Try to reinstall the OS, also, run a memtest just to be sure nothing bad happened.
How would i run a hdd test/ memtest with no working hdd to run it off of?

I booted into ubuntu live, and I can access the hard drive and everything. Why can i do this, but not boot from it?
I booted into ubuntu live, and I can access the hard drive and everything. Why can i do this, but not boot from it?
Maybe some of the system files corrupted. Just backup onto some DVD's or an external hard driver through ubuntu, and then reinstall windows 7, or windows xp.
It won't read the drive at all. It just says it can't read the disc then prompts me to restart.
Well, the hard drive is obviously bad then. Replace it.
You didn't read my previous post did you? When i try to boot from it I get a disc read error. But i am looking through the disc fine on an ubuntu live disc. Why is this?
Replace the HD but for diagnostic reasons. If it still can't boot it's not an HD problem. Probably something more serious.
Well, I don't want to waste my parents money on a new hard drive for their laptop if it won't make it work. I don't have a spare 2.5" HDD laying around to test in their computer.
I lost mine in floor and had to buy new hard drive.
I've seen PC's with faulty HD's where the data would be fine on inspection but the HD was incapable of booting the OS. It seems like it's a HD fault. I'd bite the bullet spend the 50$ or so. If it doesn't work you get a free HD. Think about it like that.

Try re-installing, or a Windows repair CD.
Before doing anything, get a revenge on your dog.
It's Disk read error if i'm not mistaken, disc usually refers to CD/DVD. Reinstall XP/Vista/7 or whatever you had before. Edit: Disk refers to hard disk, while disc refers to CD/DVD. :sigh:

Uhhh... no. "disc read error" usually refers to the hard drive. [editline]12:54AM[/editline] Damn, ninja'd.
I am attempting to install vista now.
Uhh... are you suuuure? Be sure it's one of the latest versions...
I'm just installing vista because its the first install disc i found. Ill probably install 7 or something later.
Ok. I am going to order a new HDD. My parents have a Dell Latitude 630 I think. The service tag is 9MJ64F1. I have never needed to buy a laptop HDD so can someone send me a link to a good one? It doesn't need much space. Only ~80gb.
Get 1 from dell.
Get 1 from dell.
Haha. No. Too pricey, just like the rest of their stuff.

Unless its really old or one of those crappy net books. If its an old one (Pre 2007) get an IDE, if its a netbook get a solid state drive (I think I'm not an expert with netbooks.)
if the hdd doesnt work (as in fit in), you can get this hdd shell that has a usb slot so you can boot from usb... might wanna google it.
