Hey everyone, I'm new to Facepunch but was sent here from a friend of mine. It seems like a great community and I'm glad to be a part of it! Anyway, I see everyone here is good with PC builds, hardware, etc. so I was wondering if someone could answer a question for me.
New CoD looks like a new game for once, I want it. However I do not want it for Xbox 360 due to hardware limitations and I feel as if the experience would be pure shit compared to what I could get on a good PC build. I plan on building a high-end computer within the next few months and I'm going to be converting to PC gaming soon (instead of dropping $500-$600 on a new console). But Call of Duty is one of those games that I grew up playing on the Xbox 360, and isn't a game that I would prefer using WASD for. With the proper adapters, would the controller's response time in an FPS be the same as it would be on the consoles? I hear that with a PC, the controller's signals have to go through some other coding or some dumb shit like that. I just want to know if this is true and if anyone else has experience with PC gaming with an 360 controller.
Thanks in advance!
I have a wired 360 controller for windows and the response time is fast.
I would say that a 360 wireless controller with the Official MS adapter (there a lot of non-real ones floating around) the wireless ones are the same.
However, even with a fast response time you will get steamrollered, there usually isn't autoaim on PC games like there is on XBox, and people using a keyboard and mouse will be able to aim better than you.
Using the controller is fun for driving games and twin-stick (top down) shooters is fun, but it's not able to complete with a mouse for FPS games purely on the fact it's nowhere near as accurate.
Hmm, that's interesting. I didn't know that about the auto-aim feature. Ehh, maybe I'll find a way to get used to keyboard/mouse. I do know that PC gamers are generally a lot more skilled than console gamers too, so I'm preparing my anus.
Response times are not a problem, the real problem is how much better the mouse is.
With a controller, even if you slam the stick to the edge, it'll still take awhile, and if you increase sensitivity so it'll turn faster, you'll lose control over the finer, smaller controls.
But on a mouse, you can swing it around instantly, but still maintain control for actually tracking the target behind your back.
That's why a lot of PC gamers always found the newer Call of Duty games stupid: if you get hit, you can instantly swing around and just shoot the guy who just ambushed you, you have so much/weapons don't do enough damage.
I actually just went through my Youtube channel and dug up an old video I made for testing rendering settings, but it has this:

That is one of the most bullshit kills I've ever done in an FPS, I should have been dead.

Holy shit! Yeah, no way that would've happened in consoles. Great point haha
I recommend getting a controller either way because there are so many games that are fucking awesome with controller. I still think to this day that my 360 pad with the wireless adapter is one of the best purchases for me ever.
I played Assassin's Creed and Batman: Arkham City with a keyboard and mouse, all the way though.
It wasn't bad, but when I got a controller, and played Arkham Asylum and Assassin's Creed 2 with it, it was a lot better. Games like Saints Row almost need controllers, though. I'd hate to drive cars and pilot helicopters and the like with a keyboard and mouse.
Oh yes, I'd most definitely have it hooked up for anything like that. But from what everyone's saying, definitely stick to keyboard/mouse for FPS games lol
I recently tried out my friends wireless 360 receiver with my computer and it was great. Certain games though like gmod and HL2 Deathmatch didn't feel right. GTA IV felt great though. It all depends on the game.
