• Cooling Fan Accessory Idea: Mac Mini 2011

Hey, the title pretty much explains itself so I will basically tell you what I'm hoping to achieve. I purchased a Mac Mini i5 2011 model about 3 months ago and to be honest with you all, I am extremely happy with the product. I've upgraded the ram by 6GB giving me a total of 8GB ram so it handles multiple tasks so smoothly. However, I've noticed that the system tends to heat up quite a fair amount when running source games which doesn't worry me at all cause after checking my processes and available ram that is not being used, i'm guessing it is just a general issue with the way the Macs have been built. When I take the bottom lid off, the heat escapes and the mac will quickly cool down again. This is where my idea comes in! I am planning to design a case for the Mac Mini (2011 Models Only) that has two rear intergrated fans and one bottom cap fan. When I say cap fan, I mean a screw on fan that replaces the bottom panel of the mac mini and secures the same way. Although the intergrated fan in the mac helps to cool the system down a little bit, I fear that the overheating is caused by the fact that the ventilation on the rear of the mac is so thin and small. Hence why i want to use two small fans that will be intergrated to my designed case to help cool the system down from the outside which I hope will reduce the overheating problem caused by the small ventilation at the rear. I really want this design to work and it may take months of beta testing and design changes but I can really see something good coming from this. What do you think?
You have an intel 3000.. It's not very good for gaming. Generally intel cards run source like shit also.

What you don't know is that its not about the ram and processes, its about the graphics card. the system heats up because you are running source games and they are taxing / quite resource intensive for the intel 3000 thus the fan kicks in.

Even WoW, call of duty 4, mw2 and more... Obviously depending on how I set it up
what fps do you get at the resolution you are currently playing those games on?

It's the CPU, really. You don't really sound as if you know what you are doing just by reading your thread. The Mac Mini's temperatures are fine as is, but if you would like to "make" a case otherwise, all we can really do for you is to wish you good luck.
