• Computer Build Help Please

Ok so here is the situation. I have built two computers for myself successfully in the past one of which was a AMD cpu & Nvidia gpu about 4-5 years ago when the 8800gtx was brand new. Then at the beginning of this year I built an intel + nvidia system. So here is my question. I haven't kept up to date as far as AMD & ATI are concerned but I have nothing negative to say about their products as I'm not a diehard fanboy for either. What I'm trying to figure out are two things. 1.) Is it still possible to build a machine with AMD cpu & Nvidia GPU? Or since AMD bought out ATI have they somehow linked the two so you have to buy an ATI gpu? 2.) Posting the possible build I'm making for a real close buddy of mine. I'm posting it here as I'd feel like a total ass if something was amiss. Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811517010 Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131631 Ram (probably going with 3 or 4 2gig sticks just haven't decided on how many yet): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145261 CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727 GPU: This is where I'm unsure as I don't know if it's possible to have an Nvidia gpu with AMD nowadays. Or maybe it never changed, I don't know. Honestly I'm thinking it't going to be a 5970 going here but I want some feedback. PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.540796 DVD Reader: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135204 HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136490 The main use for the computer will be digital media and 3d work. Ranging from Photoshop to 3DS Max to UDK engine tools and so forth. There will be games played on it naturally but the loss of physx and such nvidia tools might not be that bad as ATI is looking very strong since last I looked. Not to mention the incredible price difference. I'm doing some research and comparing parts but my friend is aiming at purchasing parts from now until this friday and will be paying for overnight on the parts to get it built as soon as possible.
1. Still possible
So in theory I'd be able to pop an nvidia gpu in there huh. Well that's awesome to know but the more I look at nvidia gpus they're not priced competively to fight off ATI. Honestly ATI has the upper hand as I'm sickened looking at the 580 and sickened looking at the 480 price.

(Ati was the best thing to buy 3 months ago.)
So I've been looking around the 200-ish max dollar amount for a graphics card but want another opinion besides my own. What would be suggested for performance/value for 3D creative purposes as well as for gaming for a gpu on this. I've been looking at comparison charts and at reviews for a few hours and haven't cleared my vision on this issue much if at all.
Well shitty. So my friend bought parts but he didn't buy everything needed for the build as he wasn't sure about AMD. So now he's thinking about a 1k total cost build but is thinking about 600-700 range for Mobo/CPU/GPU and I'm not sure what to tell him for intel. He's hoping to have something AMD and INTEL to compare before purchasing one or the other. I figured Asus might have a more cost friendly mobo. So the end purpose is 3DS Max / Photoshop / UDK / games like COD:BO. Any and all opinions and suggestions much appreciated. I'll put up pictures once the system is build. Thanks everyone for your time and consideration!

$1005 total, or $965 w/ rebates I included i7 and 8GB RAM because you said that the main use will be Photoshop and rendering but if you don't need it you can drop down to 4GB and an i5 and you can get a much better GPU [editline]wfef[/editline] although I will suggest that you wait for next generation cards, and for the holidays sale as well
That's awesome information! Isn't the i7-870 like the "unlocked" cpu which opens up doors for OC possibilities if the user wanted to? I haven't OCd or looked into it but it sounds like i heard that somewhere.
I don't really know what you mean by unlocking but I know you can probably hit ~4 GHz with a good cooler
Get rid of that Hard drive, it will bottleneck you. And on this motherboard as soon as you put that 5970 in it, it is going to make two of your pci slots unusable.
