Man behind the 'Fappening' celebrity nudes leak exposed
You may remember the fappening, also known as Celebgate - when an anonymous hacker, or hackers, leaked naked pictures of more than 100 celebs, including Rihanna and Jennifer Lawrence.
They worked out the celebrities' Apple iCloud log-in details and also sent phishing emails to their Gmail.
More than 400 images were leaked on 4chan and Reddit in 2014, with stars threatening legal action.
Now a man's admitted being behind the hack. But who is he?
His profile actually matches up quite similarly to that really prolific Reddit troll who ran all the fucked up subreddits.
They finally found him! The mysterious "4 Chan"!
Who the fuck would owe up to that after almost 2 years after the event? I call bullshit.

It's all lies.
I did it.
The US attorney's office says Collins used a phishing scheme where he sent e-mails to celebrities that looked like they were from Apple or Google.
He asked the victims to provide their usernames and passwords and then got access to their accounts.
You gotta be shitting me
So the celebrities actually are to some blame for this, huh

That's... a lot less impressive than I imagined.

Huh, so much for 'icloud is a piece of shit with sieve-level security'.
That's... a lot less impressive than I imagined.
I'm honestly disappointed in the celebrities. Fucking security 101, people.
didn't that old fp thread have like 6000 viewers at some point or something because of google
You can have all the IT security you want and good ol' social engineering will still take it all apart. Makes you wonder why they didn't activate 2FA.

No I'm pretty sure the person who gained access to their accounts and leaked their nude pictures is to blame.

no
A man.
A legend.

As if celebrities are technology versed. A good phishing email is not hard to put together.
"[The] defendant used numerous fraudulent email addresses designed to look like legitimate security accounts from various internet service providers, including, for example, email.protection318@icloud.com, noreply_helpdesk0118@outlook.com and secure.helpdesk0119@gmail.com," said court filings.
Collins is accused of accessing at least 50 iCloud accounts and 72 Gmail accounts.
If you give a burglar a key to your house because at first glance he seems like an alright guy, is it not partially your fault?
That whole thing was pretty underwhelming tbh. A lot of the pictures that circulated around were fake.
If you give a burglar a key to your house because at first glance he seems like an alright guy, is it not partially your fault?
i wouldnt say phishing is the same thing as handing your key to a burglar.
you cant blame people for falling for tricks. you blame the person that played the trick.
im glad hes being pursued by the full force of the law

If they're dumb enough to give their username and password to a phishing scam, do you think they're smart enough to use 2FA?
If you give a burglar a key to your house because at first glance he seems like an alright guy, is it not partially your fault?
That would be %50 your fault. Same things applys here.

i always do a double take when i read sentences like these

more comparable to a burglar dressing up as a real estate agent or something and presenting fake documents before requesting your house key

or the good ol' "hey its me, your brother"
(surprisingly enough, some people use stuff like that, saying they are grandson of X, to scam money out of old people in Japan)
If you think the Fappening was fun and games but worry about the NSA/American government invading your privacy, you're a bad person and massive hypocrite.

but boobs tho
Either way I think it's both sides fault.
So the celebrities actually are to some blame for this, huh
no because the slimy piece of shit was still the one leaking nude photos of people?
how is that any of their blame? if I give you my username + pass it doesn't automatically mean "huh i would GLADLY make you steal photos of me and upload them on the internet please"
it's stupid of course, but they were still tricked.
Hahaha what makes this so genius is that its simplicity.
I never would have guessed it was something as hilariously easy as that
A real hero.

You'd be suprised. Lots of "hacking" involves social engineering via malnipulating/decieving the right people to give you the information you want.
