Okay, so before anybody stabs me for the thread title, I'd like to ask a favor... Someone I know and myself got into an argument over Metallica selling out. I asked how and they told me that the majority of their music nowadays sounds mainstream, and they changed for money. And I'm not really a huge Metallica listener, nor do I dislike it. I just don't listen to them for some reason. So... what would YOU say in defense of the band? Erm... regardless of whether they did or not, I need a defensive maneuver to further our argument and sound like I know what I'm talking about. Otherwise, it will come to an awkward silence and I'll kill myself. ^_^
It comes down to opinion. We'll never know if they sold out or not, but they DID change their sound. Personally, I prefer their newer stuff (I don't care what anyone thinks), and it seems that a lot of mainstream listeners do too, but in no way does that mean they sold out.
1. Very stupid thread 2. Metallica made 4 of the most influential thrash metal albums, one hell of an awesome heavy metal record, and they can do whatever the fuck they want 3. They didn't sell out, they played a different style because a) Fans would have got bored if they kept rehashing their shit, so they tried to benefit them buy making a change and b) Do you think that their 'mainstream' stuff would appeal to anyone who has the mind to buy it? Seriously some 12 year old kid gets "Fuel" off of a friend, says he likes Metallica without giving them a cent of his worth, and after about a week it's completely forgotten and Metallica have not made a new audience, and certainly not made billions off 2 rock albums.
Selling out would mean they changed their musical style just because they wanted to earn more money, and not because that's the style the actually wanted to make. And like Puddlez said, their later stuff appealed to a crowd that never would really pay off to them whereas staying in the metal genre, they had more "loyal" fans, so if anything, keeping on trying and doing thrash metal would be selling out for them
Argument should pretty much stop dead when people realise their old stuff outsold any of their new "sellout" stuff. So selling out for less money makes no sense and your argument is nulled.
Metallica didn't sell out. They just changed their sound and style for the eight hundredth time. Metallica is just a band that plays a certain style for awhile and when it bores them they change on a dime. If you don't like their new shit, guess the fuck what? Don't listen to it!
what is wrong with you seriously
I prefer their newer stuff too. Funny thing is you can't do shit to change my minds. Anyways, I do not approve this thread.
what is wrong with you seriously
Nothing at all. People should be asking you that question because you can't seem to accept the fact people like different stuff than you.
Nothing at all. People should be asking you that question because you can't seem to accept the fact people like different stuff than you.
that's right I just can't live my life knowing someone thinks differently than me
since you can't stop arguing about it it seems you can't let it go.

Metallica sold out.... Every single show on their tours
James was always a country boy at heart. Load/ReLoad is just the music he wanted to make, and frankly, I think those albums are great. I'd really like to see a return to that style seeing as Death Magnetic sounds a bit tired.
Kill 'Em All was the only good Metallica album, and the only really thrashy album they ever did
Wow this thread is pretty much a perfect cross-section of Metallica fans. You have: - People who only like the first three(/four) albums and think the band sold out from black album onward - Fanboys who love anything the band puts out - Hipsters who say the albums after the black album were better than the ones before it - Super-elitists who only listen to Kill em All

I'm a thrash fan, I grew up on Megadeth and Anthrax. Kill 'Em All was their only thrash album. I can't defend anyone else's opinion, because their opinions are all wrong
personally i don't like metallica at all and think they're extremely overrated, though i at least respect and understand their contributions to metal. besides, just about every metal band sold out in the 90s, metallica selling out isn't anything new
How about we forget about this thread ? Metallica dosen't deserve this kind of talk.
what is wrong with you seriously
Says you.
what is wrong with you seriously
woah stop being such a dick I personally prefer their music from the late 80's to early 90's, I'm not one for metal but I do like And Justice For All.
Nothing at all. People should be asking you that question because you can't seem to accept the fact people like different stuff than you.
it surprises me how seriously people still take vedicardi's posts that are like this
