Today marks the 72nd Anniversary of WW2, aka Invasion of Poland

I wasn't sure if this would be an ok spot to place this.
Today marks the 72nd anniversary of the Second World War, a war the resulted in the deaths of over 75,000,000 People.
Although some people might disagree with today being the start of the war, there are a few chances that it could of started as easily in the early 30's with the invasion of Manchuria. But today 72 years ago German and Slovak troops marched onto Poland soil, or also known as The Polish Campaign. Soviet Russia Invaded from the East of Sept 16. The war would be over by the 6th of October. The Polish government went into exile and all military personal that was able to evade German capture would make their way to France to only have to move to Great Britain in the next year.
Another thing that I just realized is that since it's the 72nd Anniversary that means the earliest age a person who fought in the war would be atleast 90 years of age now...
So, what are your guy's thoughts on this? The second World War, the 2nd Great War, The War to End All Wars, or any other names you've heard it called. Like I said I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, can't think of anywhere else it would fit and I haven't really heard anything on the news about the subject of this being the 72nd year.
72 seems an odd number to pick. Anyway, both my mother and (funnily enough) her mother are Polish, they never have mentioned the war. I occasionally wonder how it affected them.
I think hitler was a pretty cool guy, he accidentaly millions of jews and doesn't afraid of gas

It's weird just how much my family were affected by WWII. I know for sure that my Great-grandfather was a Sondererkommando in Auchwitz since i've seen the records.
My other Great-Grandfather was killed in Katyn while my great-great-uncle (from the other side of the family) apparently escaped as he overheard the secretary talking to an officer (he spoke russian and was also an officer of the cavalry, he could shoot a rifle from the underside of a horse supposedly).
My great grandmother from my fathers side died in the gulags and the rest of my family (the oldest being 15) had to trek from Russia to Iran (then Persia) with Gen.Anders army and ended up in the UK. This while my other great great uncle was parachuting into occupied Poland to train the resistance, he also faught at Monte Cassino as a radio operator in a tank but he never talked about that and I can see why.

My grandfather fought in the Polish Resistance, sometime before emigrating to Australia.
He died back in 2003, and I never really talked to him about the war sadly. If only he was still here today, or if I wasn't such a quiet child.

This made me sad.
My grandfather was in WW2. U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne division, 505th PIR. Airborne Infantryman. Rest in peace, grandpa.
My Grandfather was in WWII, Sniper in the Phillipines, stationed at Hiroshima after the war. That probably fucked him up.

hitler was a pretty cool guy, he was a great leader, it's just that his methods were a bit... unorthodox

A great leader does not put his country in great debt as well as condoning mass-slaughter, not to mention all the stupid decisions he made when it comes to who to go to war against.

He saved them from debt.
I think the Finns got really fucked in this conflict. :v:
People say Hitler was a good president ignoring the genocides and the war, he helped Germany reemerge economically from the absolute poverty it was in. But he did it by investing in the war he had planned all along through heavy industry, infrastructure, and that sort of stuff, and by being a dick to Europe all around also. Was he really that of a good president?
long live the fatherland
He saved them from debt.
initially he did by making jobs for people building the autobahn and general shit like that, but in the end he just fucked things up
so I'll reword what I said to: hitler was a pretty cool guy for a year or two
That's Hellen Keller dude
No that's Helen Keller.
People usually say that Germany started it, funny thing is we declared war on them.
France deserved it.
I cannot believe some people. I was on another forum last night (well this morning) and this guy was going on about how it was not a world war till the US joined.........

Mine died in 2003 but he gave me a good description of what it was like crossing Russia with no help.
I feel like I am missing out... not a single person (dead or not) in my family was in WWII.
I think its because we migrated here from Italy in the late 40's
and my granddad was in wehrmacht
he lost his eye in France thanks to overreacting french guerilla
Then he was sent to the Eastern front, but never told anyone how many of ruskies he killed (A lot probably, and not because of his orders - pure self defence)
Sadly, he died before I was able to ask him any question (when i was 7 or something), so I only know about him from my parents' stories. He refused to take his honorary german citizenship, and dumped all of his medals into a cesspit. Not as a sign to show something (Or maybe?), but because russians were literally next-door and it wasn't really smart to stand with all these crosses on your chest in front of them
here be tl;dr

No, Hitler wasn't a cool guy, he wasn't even that liked among the people he surrounded himself with, he was a charistic guy with an opinion and amazing drive who catched an oppertunity. He was a lot more than that, an indirect mass murderer, criminal against humanity and other things ofcourse.

Hitler was smart. Despite what he did, he was a good leader.

Hitler was a fucking moron, he was the reason Germany lost ww2.
I think the Finns got really fucked in this conflict. :v:
Yeah we lost second hand and a leg but we gave them a helluva fight.
Hitler was smart. Despite what he did, he was a good leader.
No, Hitler generally wasn't a better leader than anyone else. The smart thing he did was to be able to unite the country in a time where everyone were scared. He made major misstakes that lead to Nazi Germany's defeat in the war.

He was a conservative and nationalistic thinker, which were two of his weaknesses.
