Kim Peek, the inspiration for the Academy Award-winning 1988 movie 'Rain Man,' died of a heart attack Saturday at age 58, according to the Deseret News of Salt Lake City, Utah, Peek's home. He was known as a mega-savant who had mental handicaps but also an heightened ability to memorize and recite massive amounts of information. Peek was an expert on 15 broad categories, including math, literature, sports, classical music, history and geography. He had memorized more than 12,000 books and could compute complex mathematical equations in his head. But he was born without the connective tissue needed to bring the left and right sides of his brain together. Consequently, he was unable to filter information and often had to twist a cord or hum to himself so he could block out distractions, according to the Deseret News. Kim and his dad first met 'Rain Man' screenwriter Barry Morrow at a convention in the '80s and two years later Morrow had written and sold the 'Rain Man' script. Dustin Hoffman spent time with Kim and with other savants while preparing for the role and Morrow later gave Kim the Academy Award he won for Best Screenplay. Kim carried it with him on his travels. 'Rain Man,' starring Hoffman as the afflicted Raymond Babbitt and Tom Cruise as his brother and directed by Barry Levinson, won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, in addition to Best Screenplay.
http://www.moviefone.co.uk/2009/12/22/kim-peek-rain-man-inspiration-dies/ The link above has all the documentary parts in order for easy viewing, the end of part 5 is really quite sad; it's like a send-off.
:frown:
I guess he couldn't remember how to not get a heart attack. :downsrim:
I guess he couldn't remember how to not get a heart attack. :rimshot:
that wasen't even funny, and not because it was "mean" just because it was, not, funny.
Awww, I've seen a couple shows about him and such. He was so cool. :(
That sucks :(
I know, that's why I put :rimshot: there. He had a pretty long life considering the doctors gave him max. 14 years.
I guess he couldn't remember how to not get a heart attack. :rimshot:
More like :downsrim:
Looks like something rained on his parade. [editline]05:07PM[/editline] :rimshot:

That sucks, I had the pleasure of meeting him and talking with him. He really does know almost anything, very inspirational situation I would say too.
I love that movie a lot, especially because I come from a family who fosters children from different backgrounds and levels of abilities and it feels good being able to relate to the frustration and understanding that Tom Cruise's character has to go through.
That sucks, I had the pleasure of meeting him and talking with him. He really does know almost anything, very inspirational situation I would say too.
To be honest, I find that hard to believe. However, there's no reason to argue. What was he like?
To be honest, I find that hard to believe. However, there's no reason to argue. What was he like?
Right, because I am going to lie about something like this... Think to yourself, if I was lying that means I was hoping to get something from this lie... What has this lie given me? There is no logical reason to lie about this. Pretty funny during some instances, but after a while would get off track. His dad is very nice and genuine.
Aww, I liked him. :(
This is thoroughly displeasing news.
I'm incredibly saddened by this news.
I met him at our library during a book signing once. Great man, 'tis a shame he died at such a young age.
It feels like fate is turned against people of immense genius.
Why aren't puns in news threads bannable?
Poor guy =/
He was known as a mega-savant...
I don't know why, but I find the term 'mega-savant' pretty awesome. Also: this sucks :( I saw a documentary on him, once. He was cool.
Oh shit, I thought it said, "Kim Peek, Man who inspired Raining Men
My brother is a truck driver, all truck drivers have code names kind of like how we do when they talk on the CB radios. Well anyways my brothers trucker name was Rain Man, I'm calling my brother up to tell him, kind of sad
This is terrible :( I just watched Rain Man a few hours ago in fact, and have watched a few documentaries on Kim Peek. This makes me sad.
His dad must be a wreck right now, think man, he spent so long taking care of him and stuff, and now he died :( this sucks
No puns people. This is indeed a sad event. :frown: It's sad, I just watched a special on him...
Oh god.. after watching the videos I am really sad now..
