Don't Disconnect Us (If you live in the UK and still want internet access, get in!)

As you may or may not be aware, Lord Mandleson is pretty determined to push legislation through parliament to impose a "three strikes" rule against file-sharers. This would mean that if you are identified as illegally using BitTorrent or other P2P software to download copyrighted content, you'd receive two warning letters before being disconnected from the internet.
But if you're not downloading anything you shouldn't, there's nothing to worry about, right?
WRONG
In 99% of file-sharing cases (The 1% being the few occasions where someone has their computer searched in relation to another crime) the only evidence they actually have that you were doing this is an IP address. This could mean that a person sitting at home could spoof their IP address to match yours. So if they got caught, you'd get the blame (Which could mean you getting disconnected). There is also the problem of totally unsecure, or not-secure-enough wireless networks, which would allow someone to connect to them and use somebody elses network to download copyrighted content.
You beginning to see why this system will cause problems for non-pirates?
"But Deadollie!" I hear you cry, "Surely we must be able to do something!"
Well here is the good news. There is something we can do. The UK ISP TalkTalk has set up a campaign called "Don't Disconnect Us". They are helping people like you and me get our voices on the issue heard in parliament and helping us lobby our local MP's to get them to stand up against the issue.
I've signed the downing street petition and am writing to my local MP about the issue. I encourage all of you to do the same.

Thank you for your time, Facepunch.
Seens a bit extreme and as there are 7 others in my house, we all use the same internet and so if they download illegal stuff I'm pretty much stuffed

Exactly, they're not going after the individual who now has the copyrighted material. They're going after the easiest person they think they can make look guilty. The 'owner' of the IP address they saw being used.
I'm really surprised this proposal has gotten this far

Also on slashdot there was a thing saying even MI5 are against this because everyone will just start encrypting their traffic, making their terrorist/citizen snooping harder
Hey, if you didn't want to get pegged for illegal downloading, you wouldn't be on the god damn internet in the first place.
this isnt going to happen.
I didn't actually think that the proposal had come so far.
Signing petition and joining facebook group :)
Can Americans sign?
IF they have an English address.

Shit, I just saw that.
Wish there is some way I could help you guys out.
God, Mandleson is such an idiot.
Yes, the police won't investigate your computer or anything, they just look up the IP address and send you in jail. Hell, probably will even beat you with a nightstick.

I doubt that terrorists are like "Well, I don't bother encrypting my messages about blowing up the whole city, but I am so goddamn afraid of copyright infringement!"
My ISP set a website up :D

Solution: Don't go with an ISP that cares, don't get identified or don't use torrent programs to pirate, job done.
I signed the petition, bloody goverment basterds.
fuck this. Im living in England atm since the American Airforce stationed us here. god damnit! im signing it using my british address. this is a stupid decision based souly on MONEY its just rediculous.
hehe I guess me and my friends will just Drag and Drop using our computers and devices. that means we will use Cars to travel to get music or movies which is BAD for the enviroment. -haha pretty streched out

It won't be the ISP monitoring it though, it'll be OFCOM (Government owned service)

Also, do you have to be a registered voter to sign this petition? If so then only <1% of facepunch can actually sign this, making this thread pointless.
I don't live in the UK but I'll sign it anyway

I fucking hate Mandleson...
Mandleson's a gay lord
Lord Mandleson is a fraudulent bastard anyway, lets disconnect him first.

I'd love to hear that he was disconnected because of filesharing, I wouldn't put it past him either.
I doubt ISPs would ever want to do this, it's just going to lose them customers.
How long does the list take to update?
I know that Sky is against this move and will use their mighty presence in Britain to combat this faggotry.

Should be instant.
In my eyes only the paranoid and the guilty would sign something like this.

Did you read the OP? And did you understand how with this system innocent people will find themselves having their internet connection taken away?
Old people not understanding the internet...
