After decades of hints and rumors, the original Catwoman, Selina Kyle, finally came out of the closet as bisexual this week. In Catwoman #39, Selina is the head of Gotham's Calabrese crime family, and, on the brink of a mob war, shares a kiss with the woman currently in the Catwoman costume, Eiko Hasigaway, in a moment that promises that have major ramifications for both characters as the storyline progresses. It's a big moment for the narrative, but most important is that, according to series writer Genevieve Valentine, the confirmation is canon.
why is this news?
"character development"
I fully support LGQT or whatever order it goes in but do comic books seriously have to start making everything "equal".
It's like they're trying to find an excuse to make a character gay or bi or whatever or to try and give them a transsexual or transracial treatment.
Being Bisexual isn't a character trait DC.
And its not character development either unless the character is specifically going through a part of their life where their sexuality is called into question specifically by the character in question.
Its been obvious in her personality and actions for a while now. Ok.
she wasn't already?
watch some people complain about this because they see it as just fulfilling men's fantasies.
This doesnt surprise me at all, frankly it seems in-character.
But they'll still get people who misunderstand and think theyre shoehorning sexuality
I thought she always was? It seemed like her sort of thing.

I'd kind of be willing to bet that they just did this because "hurr lesbians r hawt", but she can't be completely homosexual since some degree of attraction/involvement with Batman is a pretty big part of her character.
so am i

Well yeah, that's always been a prominent aspect is the relationship between her and batman. So yeah.
She was already bi. This has been a thing for a while.
I'm extremely pro gay, but making characters gay / bi just because they can to "Progress a story" is pretty dumb and getting a little old
It doesn't actually contribute to the story. there's not actually a point to it really. It's fine if its a thing that's out there but I feel more are doing it to get views.
But if its a character that just happens to be gay because they just are, who cares. It's just how they are.

Changing them to be gay is stupid, however. Why even bother? Although, I mean, come on, catwoman definitely swings both ways. What difference does this news make?
This isnt anything new for Batman.
See: Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, explicitly fuck buddies since the 90's animated TV show. (literally the show, they were fuck buddies in it, and ever since)
It doesn't bother me in the least, actually seems like it'd fit her character quite a bit.
Just the way she acts in most Batman story arcs involves her using her sexuality as a weapon and I don't doubt she'd use it on a woman.
this is not news.

I always think of Catwoman, Poison Ivy and Black Cat as bi

It's hardly a change, she has always seemed pretty bi.
this is not news.
I didn't know about it ten minutes ago. Now I know about. It's new to me man.

but on the other hand nobody would like a new character made solely to be a gay knockoff of an existing one. in my opinion it's better to at least make a gutsy decision with an existing character than to make a pointless token one from scratch
It's hardly a change, she has always seemed pretty bi.
of course
though, they did do it with the green lantern, so I guess he applies more really

that is a pretty solid point, but the thing is, a character based on being gay is a bad character. Don't make a character "The gay guy". Make a character who only happens to be gay.
this is hot news.
fixed.
Kinda thought that was being implied for years but okay.
honestly it might sound like a stupid thing
but lgbt representation in media is VERY important for lgbt kids especially when growing up, helps them all not have to deal with stuff like for example internal homo-, transphobia when growing up cause not seeing people like themself anywhere makes it seem like being lgbt is a bad thing.. especially when we already have bunch of other people being very negative towards lgbt things/people
i'm pretty happy to see comics adding stuff like this and actually making it clear and canon

yeah that's my point. an existing character who's eventually stated to be gay doesn't have to change a thing about their characterization. a character only made to be gay can only be gay. that's why i don't like that people react so harshly when something like this happens - if it was a half-hearted standardized gesture then they wouldn't change an existing character that people know and like, they would take the laziest route possible and make a crappy new one that they can cut out at a moment's notice.
like look at that Superman comic from the 60's where Lois Lane randomly decides to be black for a day to see how civil rights were working out (oh yeah, that happened). that's the kind of thing you want to avoid cos even if you're heart's in the right place (and at the time that might have even been pretty solid of them), it shows that you're lacking either the guts or the capacity to do anything further. making a real established character gay for more than two seconds is a serious thing - they clearly care and they want to be in it for the duration.
I think this is more of a confirmation rather than them making her Bi, as you can see a lot of people thought she was Bi, causing Rumors and Speculation that she was.
It was also implied in the comics judging by some posts here.
People actually needed confirmation for this ?
So like, some of you guys are against making a character gay or bi for no reason because its irrelevant.
Why don't we just assume every character is asexual until their sexuality has some relevance to the plot then? Works out better for everyone that way because then there's no "default" sexuality.
