Hey there, I am currently doing an assignment on Pre-Performance Rituals, and I am required to ask some questions about what everyone does before a preformance. I also thought that it would be a good thread to make at the same time, so I am hitting two birds with one stone here, hopefully. First of all, which instrument/s do you play, And secondly, what is your Pre-Performance Ritual? It would also make my assessment more interesting if you gave me some unique or weird answers, thanks. tl;dr Post what you do before a preformance to bring good luck/warm up/stop yourself from getting a boner on stage/etc.
I play almost every instrument, have only performed vocally. I usually try to look PAST the crowd, it helps with nervousness and helps me project better. Besides that, just the normal scales/warmups etc.
I play guitar. Before I go on stage, I wash my hands for ages and me and the band kinda dance on the stop and sing random songs. We once had the run of the top floor at the sheffield o2 academy, we went jogging round it then ran on stage, that was fun! Good luck with your assignment but I don't think you'll find many answers on this board.
I like to have a pre performance jam if I go on stage. Loosens me up. Stretching is good, and singing too. Anything I feel comfortable doing at the time. Talking/jamming with mates is probably the best one.
I have a quick play through with the other guitarist and try to relax as much as possible.
Get completely shopping trolley'd.
I'm abnormally relaxed. It's probably an over-compensation thing. But I do make a concious effort not to be formal or distant. I prefer to act like me and the 'audience' are just a bunch of friends. My ritual is to chat to people and act normally, also avoiding warm water on the hands for a while beforehand; it makes your fingers soft.
I play classical piano and, to be honest, there's nothing I do that's really special before a performance. I practice the pieces I'll be performing a lot and have usually played them hundreds of times by memory come concert time, but I still get incredibly nervous the closer it gets to me actually playing. As soon as I take a seat at the piano, though, I become really calm and can play through pieces quite well. I love playing - it's the waiting the makes me nervous.
i play jazz booze helps
I play guitar. I don't have much of a ritual per say, but I just jam on some really heavy riffs just to loosen up (even if I'm not playing anything heavy), and I re-tune about every 2 minutes.
I play bass and usually before a show I'll mingle with people in the crowd or other bands or ask people what did they hear about my band and not let them know I'm in it, its usually good for laughs. I buy a new keychain for every show I play afterwards too. Usually I'm the one who talks to the others in the band and help them calm down and get stuff ready which helps me calm down.
I play bass. I warm up on the side of the stage where people can still see me - not very professional, but it helps me relax. I usually have no problems once the gig actually starts since it's all fun.
