Microsoft has lost another round in its battle with the UK broadcasting company Sky to use the name Skype.
A European court ruled Tuesday that Microsoft cannot trademark Skype, its popular Internet-calling service, in Europe because its name and logo is too similar to Sky, which was known as the British Sky Broadcasting Group when litigation began 10 years ago. Sky is the UK's largest subscription TV company, and operates in other European companies including Germany and Italy.
"The Court has dismissed Skype's actions and by doing so confirmed that there exists a likelihood of confusion between the figurative and word sign SKYPE and the word mark SKY," said a press release from the General Court of the European Union.
Well I guess they'll have change it to Onepe now.

really
sounds like bullshit to me.
But Skype and Sky have literally nothing to do with each other in terms of their purpose.
Do they just have a trademark on the word Sky?
Sky also forced microsoft to change the name of Skydrive to onedrive for the same reasons.
so prepare for skype to be called onepe
I really wish I could just sit in and watch how these kind of legal battles go down. This is so fucking stupid

I kinda almost get SkyDrive, it has the word Sky in it and it's seperate, Sky are also an ISP so I could kinda see that. Skype though? That's taking the piss..
Skydrive I can sort of almost understand given that it's pronounced sky-drive, but skype is skype.
Our intention has been to protect the Sky brand with our research showing that similarities in name and logo have the potential to confuse customers,
Is this because it was your legal team who commissioned said research?
What's the point?
I have never met anyone in this country who has confused the two in any way...
Even people I know who are almost completely computer illiterate understand the difference clearly.
Literally the first time I've ever heard anybody say those two are too similar, and ofcourse it's Sky that whines. Retards.
Sky / Skype
Sky - Pe
Sky.
Clearly we have legal issues, can you see. it contains the 3 same letters, an the logo's are just so similar!
One being bland with white an blue, the other one a psychedelic colored one. Hogwash I say!
It's not uncommon for little-known companies such as "Microsoft" to try and ride on the coat tails of a hugely successful and internationally popular company like Sky.
These are the same pricks that made Microsoft change the name of SkyDrive to OneDrive.
Microsoft announced the new name on Jan. 27, six months after striking a deal with British Sky Broadcasting Group (BSkyB), the massive television and broadband Internet service provider owned in part by Rupert Murdoch. This is what happens when you search for a source instead of making the post :c
A lot of this and related stuff just seems like it's the EU and European companies trying to punish US-based tech companies for not being European. Like, yeah, it's your land and your law and your property but would this have happened if Skype was owned by European tech company? Could definitely have, but I think the chances would've been a bit less. The frequency that cases of EU companies going against US-based tech ones has happened in the past two years or so convinces me there's a motivation based on nationality, at least on the court side of things, to prioritize these cases over others.
It just seems to be getting more frivolous as this stuff keeps happening. It's quite silly. Probably not going to do great amounts of damage to anyone in the long run, but nonetheless silly.

Skype, which Microsoft acquired in 2011, was founded in 2003 and headquartered in Luxembourg in western Europe. While Skype is trademarked in the US, the company's battle with Sky in Europe dates back more than a decade.
Ok, keep the MPAA out of Europe and you can keep your Skype.

please invest in amazing british tech companies such as
thats a relief then, I guess terminator cant be real because skynet sounds too much like sky
Considering they changed the name of Lync 2013 to Skype for Business via update not long ago i don't think they have any intention of dropping the name
please invest in amazing british tech companies such as
ARM? Imagination Technologies? BAE systems?
Skypes been around for years and noones complained.......fucking stupid its like saying you can't trademark Facebook because its got Face in it.....
alright, how much are they paying the courts
how can this possibly be a case, it's completely absurd and pants-on-head retarded
THEY'RE NOT EVEN IN THE SAME BUSINESS
from now on i'm going to intentionally confuse the work "sky" with skype and vice versa because apparently the entire world is fucking retarded
The thing is that Skype is alot more known than Sky. So if they win this they'll destroy a huge brand that's known over the whole world.
I'm 100% certain those court officials are actually robots and aliens.
No human being on this planet would ever confuse those brands
Here comes OneChat.
They can probably go back to the name Lync as they have for this for their Business IM.
