• Switching to an AM3 from an AM2+, have some questions

Alright, right now I have this. (Yes, I was an idiot for getting it) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103253 I'm thinking of switching to one of these. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103694 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103674 Now, I know AM2+ boards can take AM3, but my question is, do I need to get DDR3 RAM? Also, my current board is rated at 95W, and that last CPU is 125W; would there be any risk in using it? Current Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135085
Depends, some AM3 boards are DDR3, some are DDR2.
AM3 CPUs can use DDR2 memory. If your board only supports DDR2, then you have to use it. I'm guessing your board is old enough to not have DDR3. Check for BIOS updates, because I'm pretty sure you need one to use an AM3 cpu.
grab a 630 and overclock it,
Why not save $20 and get a 620? Do they not overclock as well? Neither of them are Black Editions, so theoretically overclocking should be about the same.
I mean that stated wrong one

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135085 And I really don't want to flash the BIOS, I don't completely understand it. [editline]08:34PM[/editline] Also, I don't know how to OC. [editline]08:34PM[/editline] Wow, this place is dead without Prismatex.
What happened to Prismatex? He get shot?
What happened to Prismatex? He get shot?
perma'd for some dumb reason
perma'd I miss pris
Should be fine, since the board says AM2+/AM3. It's usually the AM2/AM2+ boards that need updates.
Alright. Will there be any problems with the 95W board/125W CPU thing?
Alright. Will there be any problems with the 95W board/125W CPU thing?
Oh yeah, just noticed that. Won't work. Look into this, though: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103649
I put a 95W CPU into a 65W board, I saw no problem there. Is there really still an issue?
I suggest taking it out of the 65w board, as it could overheat and melt shit.
I suggest taking it out of the 65w board, as it could overheat and melt shit.
It's been like that for a few months now. :v: Also, I use after-market thermal compound.
It's been like that for a few months now. :v: Also, I use after-market thermal compound.
I still don't recommend having a powerful CPU in a low power board such as that. It's like putting an i7 in an iPhone, except with less melting, and more battery dying in 10 seconds.

And it's my grandfather's, the most he does with it is TurboTax and Microsoft Office stuff.
It's actually just a dual-core AM2+ @ 2.7GHz or something. And it's my grandfather's, the most he does with it is TurboTax and Microsoft Office stuff.
Going back on topic, that tri-core would be great for your budget (and motherboard limitations). Alternatively, if you want a good quad core at a great price, get this.
Going back on topic, that tri-core would be great for your budget (and motherboard limitations).
Hmm... what's the actual risk of a meltdown? I have 5 fans in my case (1x 120mm, 1x 80mm, 1x 92mm PCI slot fan, 1x 50mm GPU fan, 1x 120mm CPU fan w/ 3 heatsinks).
What happened to Prismatex? Pris is IP banned.
Alright, but I wanted something with a very high frequency (at least 3.0GHz) and an L3 cache. I'll go with the dual core. Once again, I was an idiot for going with the 2.3GHz triple. That was when I still thought frequency times number of cores means total frequency. :v: [editline]09:58PM[/editline]
Pris is IP banned.
What did he do?
Hezzy had a grudge against him or something.
as long all those aren't connected to the mobo you are good
All those are currently connected and I use a 95W CPU :v: But the board is 95W, so meh [editline]10:00PM[/editline]
Hezzy had a grudge against him or something.
What, did he refute some idiocy that Hezzy spouted? (NO NO NO DON'T BAN ME I MEAN THAT IN THE NICEST WAY POSSIBLE) Also, isn't LazyV not a mod anymore?
I really would use molex to 4pin fan
I really would use molex to 4pin fan
What do you mean? Oh wait I see what you mean. All of them are molex except the CPU fan.
oh then you are fine
oh then you are fine
To use a 125W? :v:
