The majority in Crimea who are opposed to joining with Russia show their allegiance to Kiev in a protest in Simferopol
Ukraine's national security chief Andriy Parubiy warned on Wednesday of a "critical situation" on the country's eastern and southern borders, where he said more than Russian 80,000 troops were now massing.
He said there was a "threat of a full-scale invasion from various directions" and warned that some troops were just "two to three hours" from Ukraine's capital, Kiev.
Mr Kerry told Senators that he believed Russia currently did not "have the assets... necessary to be able to march in and take over Ukraine", though he acknowledged this could change.
Speaking ahead of his meeting with Mr Lavrov, he said the question was whether Moscow was "prepared to find a way to negotiate with Ukraine... to resolve this in a way which respects their legitimate interests".

MOSCOW – A Ukrainian army colonel whose troops have been challenged by Russian marines for control of a Crimean air base threatened Thursday to open fire unless given new and formal instructions to hold off by his nation’s defense ministry, the UNIAN news agency reported.
“Being under constant pressure from Russian Federation army servicemen and local militia … we are acting on oral orders to hold on, not to give in to provocations and not to open fire,” Col. Yuly Mamchur said in a statement quoted by UNIAN news agency. “In case you don't provide corresponding decisions, we will be forced to act in accordance with Ukraine army statute, including opening fire.
“We have a clear understanding that we won't be able to resist the Russian troops prevailing in arms and preparedness,” he added, “but we are ready to fulfill our duty to the end.”
Mamchur’s troops were protecting the military base in Belbek late last month when Russian forces took control of the airstrip and more than three dozen Ukrainian MiG-29 jets. His forces continue to control administrative buildings and have firearms and ammunition, Defense Ministry spokesman Lt. Col. Alexei Mazepa told the The Times by telephone. The Russians are pressing Mamchur and his troops to hand over their guns and leave the base, Mazepa said.
I really don't think (and hope) they'll invade mainland Ukraine. Hopefully all they want is Crimea.
Ukraine has the right as every country does to defend its land from foreign forces. 80k seems like a lot and clearly Ukraine has been taking the high road while its neighbor hasn't.
God damn it, Russia, stop being a cunt.
This is like the standoff between Fort Briggs and Drachma from Fullmetal Alchemist.
What's up with Czar Putin trying to go the way of Saddam, then?
we all know this will end only one way. since russia will not stop after all that's been said (threats from the rest of the world should be enough. there is fuck all in russia and after trade sanctions are even MENTIONED, they should cower.), the only way for them to stop is military force.

Even then, Russia must be stopped. The Crimea is separate from Russia. Letting them annex the Crimea will just embolden them to make stronger demands for more land.
East Ukraine next, then the whole Ukraine. No doubt they would try that in Estonia and Latvia on account of "protecting" the Russians there.
At least Ukraine has literally every Western country behind them.

They probably won't attack NATO countries
They probably won't attack NATO countries
Putin is probably insane enough to try if he succeeded in Ukraine.
If I were Putin I'd do the same thing. Imagine having your name in history books for ever. It doesn't matter if it was a bad thing or not. And who knows. Maybe he'll do a really good job in Ukraine?
They probably won't attack NATO countries
As a citizen of America to a citizen of "the Ukraine" I hereby dub thee country a member of N.A.T.O.
now live in piece

I don't think so, Russia's economy is international enough that doing so would make the economy suffer form ruined relations.

Time kills everything, no use jerking yourself off knowing two generations will know about you while the fifth generation and more down the line, except for a few fanatics, wouldn't give less of a fuck about your name and what you did.
Putin is probably insane enough to try if he succeeded in Ukraine.
Then they'd have an instant war on two fronts, with Americans on the East and the rest of NATO on the West
Ukraine is in Russia's traditional and historic sphere of influence. They probably figure that they need to show forces to keep it that way, as their border region is crumbling to the west and leaving Russian manipulation. While I doubt it, it wouldn't surprise me if Putin pulled some Georgia shit on Ukraine.

Most NATO countries can't deal with a war right now, the most we can do and should do is just help with diplomatic solutions though. It's also a mess worth physically avoiding.
Hey guys I just woke up so why does russia want crimea?
There won't be another global war Jesus Christ.
Most NATO countries can't deal with a war right now, the most we can do and should do is just help with diplomatic solutions though. It's also a mess worth physically avoiding.
NATO combined has the most war-capable and most combat effective military on the planet. Economically devastating perhaps, hardly something we "can't deal with". I would imagine fighting would be isolated to Ukraine/Eastern Europe anyhow, neither side would want to see a full-scale multi-theater war in today's age. We could have a smart bomb through the capitol of each side before anyone had the chance to pick up the red phone.
They probably won't attack NATO countries
Even if they were to do so, Russia would get the living shit stomped out of them
Putin is probably insane enough to try if he succeeded in Ukraine.
I honestly think Putin is very sane and level-headed. He knows exactly what he's doing and how the rest of the world is likely to react. With that in mind, he will not attack any NATO country.
Hey guys I just woke up so why does russia want crimea?
Most of the heavy industry in Ukraine is there, and I'm pretty sure it's got a deep water port or two there too, which Russia would fancy. (I'm pretty sure Sevastopol has a huge port?)
Hey guys I just woke up so why does russia want crimea?
1. Crimea is a launch point concerning Ukraine which is swinging to western influence away from Russia
2. It has a Russian majority and Russia fears the new Ukraine government will persecute them (which is BS)
3. Russia is trying to start shit to show they're still a superpower
I honestly think Putin is very sane and level-headed. He knows exactly what he's doing and how the rest of the world is likely to react. With that in mind, he will not attack any NATO country.
Russian bonds and the rouble are both collapsing in value, while Russian economic growth predictions are being revised down.
His oligarchs are going to become increasingly angry and disloyal.
Most of the heavy industry in Ukraine is there
No it's not. Russia wants Crimea because Russia wants all of Ukraine. This is just the first step
Even if they were to do so, Russia would get the living shit stomped out of them
If Russia and China combined they'd put up a fair fight, through sheer number alone instead of a tech advantage.
I hate talking about stuff like this anyway, because it'll (thankfully) never happen.
No it's not. Russia wants Crimea because Russia wants all of Ukraine. This is just the first step
Ahh, wasn't aware it wasn't. I thought that most of the heavy industry was focused in the eastern regions of Ukraine, including Crimea. Fairly clear that Russia wants the whole hog though.
Is it happening?
I think it's happening
They probably won't attack NATO countries
Quick, join NATO. It cannot be that hard, I mean they let Poland in.
