Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-TX) said Sunday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be remembered as a historic leader, on par with King Solomon and other biblical rulers.
“I said, ‘I am talking about all time. The big ones. Going back to David, to Solomon, up through Josiah, Hezekiah until the end, on up through Ben Gurion,’” Gohmert continued. “All of the greatest leaders of Israel had one thing in common: They called upon the nation of Israel to honor the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and that has not happened in many decades.”
The Republican representative said the United States was pushing Israel “into a corner,” referring to the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks being mediated by Secretary of State John Kerry. He warned Israel was going to see “a couple of crises this year.”
Gohmert said Netanyahu should deal with the crises by calling for nationwide prayers.
“And I know you’ve got secularists, and I called off a couple, that you have to deal with here and tell them this is not for you, it is only for people who believe, but I’m declaring a national day of prayer and fasting in this crisis for God’s direction and protection, and for all of those who believe,” he explained. “And I said, I promise you God will answer that prayer, the secularists will hear, the world will see, and even people in the United States will see, and Israel will be blessed because of you doing that.”
I'm no Psychologist, but Louie Gohmert could be insane.
From a religious standpoint, I don't even get why the American far-right is so obsessed with Israel on religious grounds.
I mean, its destruction in the Classical era was interpreted as divine punishment for refusing Jesus, the messiah, and the Jewish weren't God's chosen people anymore as well, as the fact that now all mankind can gain salvation is -the- point of the New Testament. But according to these mostly American groups, sects, whatever, the whole world hinges on Israel's existence because- why exactly? It's not the promised land anymore. And neither are Jewish people any special anymore in the eyes of God.
In fact, from a purely religious point, their faith is now based on a gross oversight of the fact that the Messiah was prancing right in front of them.

Not trying to argue politics here, just arguing basing politics on a religious argument, and not even that, but a religious argument which is completely baffling, as it kinda contradicts the religion it appeals to
Well that's religion in a nutshell.
More like that's Israel in a nutshell.
And because I'm dumb, does someone know if Israel spends the US aid money on others things besides defense? I think it would be pretty funny if they just turned around and used some of that money to buy members of congress.
Interpreted by who? The New Testament is fan-fiction based on the Torah. Jews have no reason to accept the New Testament as God's word because God's word was already written for them.
You seem to be implying the New Testament is a legitimate continuation of the Torah and that Jews' faith is inherently flawed because they don't accept it as such, which is absurd considering the entire point of faith is believing in something without evidence to support it.
Saying that the Jews are wrong because they don't accept the New Testament is pretty much the same as their claim that they are still God's chosen people and that Jesus wasn't the Messiah. There's no proof on either side.
All the religions involved make just as ridiculous claims as any other, so saying Jews are believing something more ridiculous than those people that accept the New Testament is not a statement that you can honestly make.
I think he's less saying the Jews are ridiculous for not believing the New Testament, and more that hardline Christians are giving just as much weight to the Old Testament as they are the New, even though the latter was supposed to supplant the former.
well if he is king David then he is going to end his reign like king David did, go crazy kill everyone then get thrown out of his own country. except this David possibly has nuclear weapons and one of the most built up military forces in the world... so ya it will be basically WWIII let's not start comparing people to biblical figures because nothing ends well in the bible NOTHING and its always because people can't just talk their problems out instead they keep killing each other until somebody comes along and does something to end it.

worked fine in biblical time when its between a few hundred to a few thousand people but today there are too many people on the line in both sides to go to war and have less than an absolute world war. fucking crazy republicans still hold onto this ideal that Israel can bully their way through the middle east and "defend" themselves with military strikes everywhere they want, this is not 1947 anymore, both sides could destroy each other if they really went to war again

What I said, I said from a religious, Christian standpoint. AKA the kind of people who make up a good portion of the Republican party, and its voter base. From a Jewish standpoint, yes, the New Testament is ridiculous fanfiction. From a religious Christian standpoint, the Old testament is more a historical document than any true guidance, as the New Testament's moral guidelines mostly overlap with/replace those written in the Old.
Which is why the heavily Christian Republicans', so to say, obsession with Israel is just baffling, from a theological/academical standpoint. Probably because it's just an excuse for political interests, just like how the Crusades weren't truly about matters of faith, either.
Israel has to span most of the Middle East in order to kick off the apocalyptic nuclear war that will bring Jesus back. It's quite simple, really.
To anyone thinking I'm making a joke, I really wish I was. This is what some people legitimately believe.
That's reassuring. :v:

The latter does not "supplant" the former.
religion sucks
The latter does not "supplant" the former.
Heresy.
Heresy.
Nope. Jegus himself said as much.
I honestly cannot stand the unconditional Israel worship in this country.
Right, having lived in Israel for a bit too long in my life, just no.
Not to mention most of the country hates the guy, but he's generally just a shitty politician in general. He practically bows down to the heavily Orthodox minorities of Israel and generally is a fucktard.
religion sucks
What, your mom make you go to church again? Religion serves as a stress relief and sense of hope for much of our species, even if it has been used in malicious ways. Shave the fucking neckbeard and realize that regardless of what your beliefs are, religion has helped us come a long way as a species. And no, you're not edgy.

It probably has to do with the overall image he was showing at his early career

Religion has actually done more to take humanity back in progress than develop it.
The fact that so many people became dependent on it, is horrible.
Nope. Jegus himself said as much.
Jesus is a heretic.
Texas is not Israel, Louie, you fucking wallet-for-brains.
Both Netanyahu and King David had multiple marriages, and tumultuous personal lives involving affair.
So in this regard, yes, they are alike.
you forgot crazy, dont forget that
I'm honestly never surprised by what comes out of Gohmert's mouth.
