• Did Anybody Else Find "The Exorcist" To Be Fairly Boring?

I may be part of a minority when I say this, but I found the first half of the movie to be very slow and dull. I'm all for slow movies, but this one I think was more disappointing than "bad". This movie wasn't bad, but it's no classic in my eyes. The second half and the ending were perfect, though. I thought that the first half was basically just talking about uninteresting bullshit; and it's not that I "hate talking" in films, in fact, I love it if it's done right. (Examples being "Reservoir Dogs", "Pulp Fiction" or Inglo--...anything Tarantino.) The movie is still fairly frightening, but I think I'm just too desensitized for it to leave a "haunting" effect on me. Does anybody else feel this way, or am I the only one that thinks of this movie as a boring one?
I found it hilarious. Especially the bit of her going down the stairs on her back, frothing with blood.
I thought it was funny to tell you the truth.
I didn't find it "funny", just very slow in the first half.
No. It builds the characters up so that you can actually care about their troubles. It's definitely one of the more unnerving films I've seen and I consider it to be one of my favorite horror films. That staircase scene... :ohdear: How the hell can anyone find comedy in it? You'd have to be pretty high to find it funny in any way.

I thought that movie was fucking hilarious.
Demon: I'm not Regan. Father Damien Karras: Well, then let's introduce ourselves. I'm Damien Karras. Demon: And I'm the Devil. Now kindly undo these straps. Father Damien Karras: If you're the Devil, why not make the straps disappear? Demon: That's much too vulgar a display of power, Karras.
That was actually the best quote now that i think about it, it was somewhat funny in a black humor way.
yeah i agree it was too slow in the beginning, but i still like the movie. i understand we need to learn about the characters and stuff but it goes on for way too long, sometimes i even fall asleep during it it goes on too long, but the exorcism itself was great.
If you think it was 'funny' or boring then you've missed the point! Mark Kermode, film critic of much esteem, believes The Exorcist is the best film ever made. Want to know why? Read his book: http://www.amazon.com/Exorcist-BFI-Modern-Classics/dp/0851709672/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1288745345&sr=8-1
I didnt think the movie was boring, it had a nice buildup. Sadly it built up to one of the most anticlimatic endings ever. [sp]when that priest dude threw himself out of the window[/sp] I was like "wtf?" Also, [sp]the demon face randomly popping out were cheap scares imo[/sp]
The world is a different place than it was when the film was made. And the time it was ground breaking, shocking, terrifying and banned. It's pretty tame compared to some stuff we see today and because of that your mind refuses to register it as interesting.
"That movie was funny." "That movie was boring." Great conversation.
With horror films a lot of the start up no matter how long is designed to build tension, without this you would'nt have found the 2nd half of the film as nearly as brilliant as you did, of course character development is obvious and in the case of the Exorcist it's very well built up, but as far as horror goes long periods like this are designed to create an unnerving effect. The idea being that after being slowly reeled into the plot you're suddenely blown into a huge scene out of the blue making the scene have a greater impact then it would have had without that initial build. It works extremely well in horror and sadly isn't used very much today, a recent film that did make use of it was The House Of The Devil (which purposely done so as it was a throw-back to those days of cinema), plus the slow tension really does make the final scenes much more creepy espicially on a 2nd viewing, it's that very defined characteristic that makes this a great classic not to mention the possession and inevitable exorcism scenes are some of the best scenes in horror history. If you look at other great horror classics such as Rosemary's Baby (one of my personal faviroutes) it used this outstandingly by slowly building up nightmarish images in the viewers mind and going completely mad towards the end making it all the more powerful.
I found it KJN, you know what I'm saying?
I can understand why a generation that grew up with movies like SAW and other crap horror movies won't like the Exorcist. If you don't like awesome writing, complex story telling, and character development, feel free to stay away from the following movies (I've put alternative suggestions that you might like based on the criteria you seemed to have laid out in parenthesis next to each movie because I CARE about you.) The Shining (The New Friday the 13th) Reservoir Dogs (Point Break) The Godfather (The Transporter or Crank) Jaws (Piranha 3D) Shawshank Redemption (Death Race) Dr. Strangelove (Vampires Suck) Apocalypse Now (Rambo (take your pick))
