Rediscovered Newspapers Shed Light on Current Enemies for many Americans

Early today, newspaper clippings from 1993 became wildly circulated on the internet following their posting on popular site Reddit.
The clippings, in brief, describe a "Anti-Soviet warrior" and his struggle. Some of those who looked closely were shocked to discover the face of a man who had been the central focus of international anti-terrorism efforts for the past decade. The man, of course, is Osama Bin Laden. Although killed in May of this year following a commando raid on his hideout in northern Pakistan, he has remained the face of modern terrorism for many.
"It's terrible, really. I didn't know we once worked with him, [Osama Bin Laden]." Said one concerned American. When asked if he knew that the now-deceased terrorist had once been a staunch American ally against Soviet expansionism, he declined to comment further.
Bin Laden spent millions of his own family's fortune in the Soviet-Afghan war. He was an idyllic leader of the Mujahideen, the foremost resistance group that sprung up to combat the soviet occupation. During the course of the war, the United States government secretly funneled hundreds of millions of U.S. dollars to the Mujahideen. Proceeding open U.S. assistance and a string of setbacks inside the country, the Soviet government withdrew its forces in early 1989. The Soviet Union would collapse just two years later.
Although his story is well known by historians who have studied the war, some question how the United States could end up financing a man who would later coordinate efforts to strike terror into the hearts of Western civilization.
It seems to be yet another reminder of the sad state of affairs in Afghanistan.

It's because most of the people on reddit are <18, and this isn't something taught in schools. You learn about the Soviet-Afgahn war, but you're not told the specifics. Just that we were fighting big bad Gorbachev.
yeah guys but it's just a wacky conspiracy theory!!!
The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

I was taught about this in 8th grade history. I live in the US by the way.

the civil war was about southern states seceding, not slavery. slavery was one of many reasons that southern states started to secede, but there were countless other issues and to say it was just about slavery is like saying gun control or gay rights is the only divisive issue today.
Reagan didn't end the Cold War, but the Cold War was effectively ended under Reagan's administration (and officially under Bush's). That's probably what you were taught, not that Reagan himself ended the war.
Civil war was states rights which slavery played a component in, but even then slavery wasn't banned till the middle of the Civil War with the emancipation proclimation, because before then states like Kentucky, Maryland, so on had slaves. However, they stayed part of the union.
Wow, people really didn't know about this? Most of the Taliban and Al-Qaeda's leadership when we invaded was made up of veterans from the Soviet war that we had secretly supplied with weapons and training.
Yeah. When you think about it. Their rage isn't really a big wonder. Qur'an or no. You left them to rot years ago...

Please name these rights please. Give an example of one right that the states seceded over.
Yeah. I still don't get the whole "states rights" thing. I thought only civilian individuals had rights and that the state should govern within them.

It's a holdover from the early days where the original 13 states were afraid of losing their autonomy to the Federal government, so many provisions were made so that the Federal government would have precisely limited powers and the states had the authority to do everything else.

They aren't "rights" in the same sense as "human rights", think more in terms of sovereignty.
