• First Time Cat Owner. What Should I Know?

On Wednesday my dad brought home a tiny kitten which found its way into and under a checkstand's conveyor belt housing at his workplace. He said it was in there from when left in the afternoon on Tuesday until got it out on Wednesday afternoon. Said the thing was whining and meowing the whole time which makes me wonder why no one else bothered to try and get it out. Anyway, this kitten is pretty small, probably a few months old, and appears to be healthy. He's a cute little guy who isn't shy or scared which makes me wonder if he was raised by someone else or is just used to human interaction on the street and is a bold little one. I have no idea. We were going to give him to some guy who my dad thought wanted it, but ended up keeping it after finding out the guy wanted to put him up for adoption. In my opinion, he should have let the guy take it and we SHOULD put it up sometime in the very near future because we've never owned a cat and I don't think the responsibilities of raising one is something the rest of the family is ready to accept. Today we got him a litter box and gave him a flea bath which he didn't like. I would think the next step to take is to get him his shots and checked out by a vet and after that, get his new ownership in order if we decide to keep him. He seems to like finding small dark spots to hide in, so maybe we'll get him a small cozy cat house or something. ANYWAY, as this is my first kitten, I'm turning to you guys for advice, as I know many of you guys own cats yourselves. I don't really know what to generally expect in terms of it's behavior and habits, I don't know what would keep a cat entertained, although he does seem to be able to do that on his own, and I don't know what kind of food to give him yet. Do you guys have any advice to give me so I help properly raise this kitten? tl;dr: first cat. what to do.
Love it unconditionally... No but seriously, it's kind of like common knowledge, feed it cat food, give it a water-bowl (however all the cats I've had drink out of the toilet despite the fact that I give them water bowls...) and some cats don't need entertainment and are very independent, if that cat isn't shy and he is more bold than chances are he'll grow up to be independent. Also don't let it go outside until it gets a little bit older so it is wiser and whatnot.
Give it water, not milk.
I want one :(

You've got to give it lots of love and hugs and stuff. :ohdear:
Omg make it go outside. If you can't keep up your litter box then be prepared for a delight when it sneaks into your closet every day to take a big one right on your favorite shirt. All my cats are outsiders now just because of things like that.
Catnip is a gateway drug.
You need to film its every move in case it does something wacky
It will shit and piss. Everywhere.
Yell at it someone post thatvideo, its 1:25 am and im too sleepy
If you want to give it milk, give it cat milk not human milk.
Cat's are the children of Satan, and should be killed before they kill you.
Just treat it right. they sleep like 95% of the day anyways so they aren't a real big deal. I don't even feed mine when I leave for a few days, they just eat lizards and mice and stuff.
Enjoy it while it's young and does not start gaining weird habbits like pissing everywhere.
The end with the head is the front.
Hardcore cat owner here, so let's see... Cats are likely to get very excited when feeding is imminent, and often literally jump around your legs when you grab the can. You will unavoidably step on it/kick it lightly on accident, just because the cat jumps before you. Other thing is, cats are hard to teach anything, including not sleeping in your bed/not pissing in the corner/anything. Don't be afraid to kick it off your bed, hit it's nose when it pisses indoors, or scream at it like a madman. Cats only learn from that. :v:
Lock your bedroom door at night to obtain sleep, and keep a 5mw laser handy for the cat to chase.
take it to the vets and give it some of the basic anti-flu/illness shots. Make sure you feed it, but not too much. I hate fat cats. Usually a can a day seems to be good enough to keep it healthy. My cat loves to play with strings and chases them if I drag one or something. Different cats like different toys, though. Also change the litter box fairly often. I learned this the hard way.
Depends on the cat. If he grows long hair you'll have to brush him like daily cause knots and tangles can lead to skin infection. You might want to get him declawed in the front. Feed him water not milk.
Don't treat it like a human. [editline]08:39PM[/editline] No seriously, don't.
Get some toys for it. Cats love toys. Especially kittens. Locking your bedroom might not be needed, for example my cat is quite peaceful and quiet. Loves sleeping on my toes, too.
Dont give it milk its bad for cats only normal cats milk is good, dont buy any cats milk you wierdo. Anyway take it to the vets get it thingyed so it cant reproduce, theres to many homeless cats in thw world and thats just adding to them so dont let it reproduce and get it microchipped so if you lose it and its found they can scan it to know its yous. love it sooooooo much
OP
If it dies from old age, and not a disease, it's okay to eat it.
While it's a kitten, it can freely go around outside as long as you watch it, however as it gets older, it should more rarely come outside, or it'll end up under a car's tire as it'll become addicted of being outside.
Is it an outdoor cat? If it is, be wary should it wonder in and out of the house. Found a dead rabbit under my bed once.
Cats are assholes.
