• Computer Restarts Almost Randomly

As the title states, my computer restarts. A lot. Mostly when I try to play any of the games on my computer. The only game that doesn't make it restart is STALKER SHoC, but I doubt thats the problem. I have a feeling it's a hardware failure, either my motherboard or the Power Supply. When I turn the computer on after being off for a while, a very high pitched buzzing noise comes from either the back of the computer or the side where the motherboard is, it's very hard to tell. I really just want to know which part it is so I can replace it knowing if I do the problem will stop. I would hate to buy the wrong part and have the problem remain. So, what does Facepunch think? Power Supply or Motherboard? Or is it another problem? (and yes, I made a thread a while ago about this, but it was never resolved.)
Post your temps with hwmonitor. [editline]12:05AM[/editline] also specs [editline]12:05AM[/editline] [url]http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php[/url]
Intel Core 2 Duo @1.86GHz at about 35C for both cores nVidia GeForce 8800GTS at 72C hard drives at 33C 2 sticks of PNY DDR2 ram, 2 GB not sure how to find Motherboard or Power supply all temps are idle
That card is pretty hot for idle. [editline]12:20AM[/editline] Maybe the noise is the GPU fan not working properly and the shutting down is overheating + automatic shutdown. [editline]12:20AM[/editline] Is there another card lying around you can try with or switch to integrated and see if this problem persists?
Shit, no other video cards laying around other then a broken one. How would I go about switching to integrated? Just taking it out?
I would say it is your power supply, possibly not enough power for the bestly graphics card.
Just take it out, or there *might* be an option in your BIOS to go to integrated. Unless your mobo doesn't have a chip. [editline]12:27AM[/editline] [QUOTE=Keithoms;17643961]I would say it is your power supply, possibly not enough power for the bestly graphics card.[/QUOTE] It's not exactly a 5870. Anyway, look at those GPU temps.
Alright so I took the graphics card out, realized I cant plug in my monitor without it, so I just pulled as much dust out of the fan as I could, and plugged it back in. Now the temp is at a solid 60 C, not sure if it will rise anymore. but now its rising up again, slowly though. its at 63 now.
It seems your motherboard doesn't have integrated graphics then :frown: That's a MUCH better temp, try playing games now. Does it still reboot?
[QUOTE=CombineGuru;17644615]It seems your motherboard doesn't have integrated graphics then :frown: That's a MUCH better temp, try playing games now. Does it still reboot?[/QUOTE] Gah, fuck. Still reboots. Let me just playing the games with lower settings.
Try running 3dmark06 for a few hours and report back on whether you get reboots or not, then.
I didn't get any reboots while running 3dmark06. Strange... also, the scenes in that look fucking incredible.
If you lift the side of the case off, and stick your head inside, can you identify exactly which component is "buzzing"?
How about do that and check the PSU for its wattage.
[QUOTE=TheBigPal;17643760] not sure how to find Motherboard or Power supply [/QUOTE] Should be printed on the side of the power supply (big box with cables and fan) in Watts (W). Also, try and find the brand :c00l:
Just clicked the Demo button on the 3DMark06, and halfway through the demo it rebooted my computer. As soon as I got to my desktop i started the temp monitor and the graphics card is now 73 C again. Also, I checked the power supply, and it's a shitty ass A Open, which has a laughable peak of 350W. i think the model number for it is Z350-08ATA. I also found the source of the buzzing, its my graphics card.
So it's probably your graphics card fan not getting enough power... A Open is total shit, and it's only 350W peak. nVidia recommend 450W for an 8800GTS and even that's probably talking about a respectable brand. So it's not my motherboard? Whew. Thought I was going to have to spend like 100 bucks on a new one. Wanna recommend me a power supply?
Look at my above post :P [editline]02:49AM[/editline] Also you could try a new GPU as the 8800gts is getting old now. [editline]02:50AM[/editline] But CPU is shit as well
Those look pretty good, cheap too! Thanks for the help.
That CPU will bottleneck the 4870 badly though. [editline]03:04AM[/editline] Download CPU-Z: [url]http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php[/url] Go to "Mainboard" tab and find the mobo manufacturer and model.
I have an Intel D946GZIS i guess.

[editline]02:50AM[/editline] But CPU is shit as well[/QUOTE] just because a card is old doesn't mean you need to replace it hell I'm on an 8800GT and I'm still fine, also if OP is running at 1280x1024 or something he'll be fine for probably another few years
I really want to know why the only game I can play without crashing is STALKER SHoC. Its more demanding then a lot of the other games im trying to play...
I had this a while ago, I found out my fan wasn't secure properly, I put it back in securely and It was fixed.
[QUOTE=343N;17670567]I had this a while ago, I found out my fan wasn't secure properly, I put it back in securely and It was fixed.[/QUOTE] Well I did some tweaking with my fan settings and put it up to 100% speed, which cooled it down A LOT, down to 60 degrees again, then tried to run a game, but it restarted. Might be worth a shot though, how did you go about doing that?
