My RA currently has a Toshiba laptop with an annoying habit of overheating (like 95C) and he'd like to replace it. Since this laptop never leaves his dorm anyway he's decided to invest in a desktop instead. There are a couple of snags in this plan, though. The first is he has no existing desktop hardware apart from a set of speakers. This means no monitor, no keyboard or mouse, etc. He also only has an OEM copy of Vista. I've read in another thread it's possible to install OEM software on other computers, so hopefully he can get off relatively cheap with a student upgrade to 7.
Ok. Budget is around $1000. So far all I've seen him play are LoL and Minecraft, so it doesn't have to be a top of the line gaming rig, which should help free up money to go toward better peripherals or something.
fuck the op country bug strikes again this is in america so newegg
Sorry, what's an RA?
ripe ass.
Resident assistant. A college student that manages other students living in a residence hall on campus.
I'm not usually one to bump my own threads (not that I've really made that many anyway) but I'm still not knowledgeable enough about hardware to make a list myself.
Ah fuck it. Here's what I attempted to throw together, still lacking a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and OS. Help me cheap it up:
Mobo: ASUS M4A87TD EVO
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 955

$805.92 is the best I can do, considering I spent quite a bit more on my own build. Shows how much I know about value.
On $1,000 an i5 2500k is recommended just for the future, 955's are good budget quads but the $200 gives a nice performance difference.
Other than that everything seems fine, just get a good 1155 with x8/x8 or better and add a 2500k OEM with a hyper 212 evo.
I still need keyboard/mouse and a monitor. And Win7, but like I said, I think I can get away with using a student upgrade on his OEM copy of Vista.
Whatever model of Logitech speakers he owns has a subwoofer. Do I also need to include a sound card? And would he really need the 212? There's around a 0% chance he's ever going to OC it.
And in terms of reliability and noise, how does the Twin Frozr II compare to EVGA's single-fan 560 Ti?
Added an Acer 20" LCD monitor, Logitech G110 keyboard, and Logitech G300 mouse. I'm almost certain there are better, cheaper KB/mouse options, though.
Fuuuuuucking more ideas. If I replace the AMD mobo/CPU with the MSI P67 mobo and the i3-2100, the price stays about the same. Is the 100 MHz clock speed difference going to do anything considering how much better Intel's stuff is supposed to be?

EDIT: Swapped mobo for one supporting SLI.
$936 before taxes. I'm sure it can be improved more but it's what I would start out with. I have no idea why your build above goes with a $100 aluminium case, in my opinion that's a waste of money considering the case of the PC won't make things run better.
I picked that case because Lian-Li is supposed to be like the god of nice cases. Not a big deal though, I guess it does save some money.
And I don't think he's ever gonna need SLI.

It was only $20 more and had some extra SATA ports as well as USB3 so I figured what the hell, why not. As I said, you can tailor it to better suit his needs. Was just a starting point with a nice quad core and a nice gpu.
