Developers Croteam has created software which detects if you are playing an illegal version of the game and then unleashes the creature on to your character, the Dark Side of Gaming reports. The giant scorpion endlessly pursues your character and then kills him, bringing the game to a frustrating end. Croteam declined to comment on the new technology, saying that they preferred to let the scorpion “speak for itself”, the Daily Mail reports. However, PC gaming website Blog Rock, Paper, Shotgun fears gamers would pirate the game just to experience the horrors of the pink scorpion for themselves. “Serious Sam 3′s DRM (Digital rights management) is brilliantly cruel, punishing only those who pirated it,” Blog Rock, Paper, Shotgun says on its website. “The only problem now is, I’m quite tempted to pirate Serious Sam 3 just to see this happen.” Serious Sam 3 was released last month PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 last month. This is how you do DRM, Ubi.
This is how you do DRM, Ubi.
except for two things 1. People are still going to pirate the game and cracking it could in fact be much easier 2. People are going to pirate the game to try it out, then assume the game is frustratingly difficult and decide not to purchase it
Eh, amusing but people will figure out how to crack it. Plus, I don't think DRM that deliberately fucks up the game experience is a good road to go down. As opposed to, you know, just fucking up the game experience as collateral damage.
A khnum that runs around smashing through walls and throwing fireballs would be pretty badass. It should also have a pirate hat and an eye patch and a hook.
I want to see someone do a speedrun where they finish the game while the scorpion is chasing them.
A giant, humanoid, red tinted scorpion monster uses incredible speed to hunt down and effortlessly murder what would normally be a powerful videogame character? It lives.
Little bit like ArmA. If the game is cracked it makes all npcs like super bots and fucks up your aiming. It also randomly turns you in to birds and shit too if I'm correct.

It's inevitable that pirates will get around the DRM so you might as well have some fun with it.

Well, pirates just could use a health trainer/hack and continue playing the game...
if i ever decide to add drm to my games here's how i do it. If someone pirates it, there will be a random generator that picks a random number between 1-1,000,000,000. Only one to five numbers will be the right one. It only randomly picks a number once, if it gets the wrong number the game runs normally and nothing happens. but if the right number is chosen, while the game is doing initial loading, it will download a set of files that replace all the levels. This is to not make people look inside the game files and see the edited versions in the pirated copy when they get the wrong number and to add word of mouth value. ever read those creepy pasta games where some guy buys pokemon black and the whole game is entirely fucked up? it will be exactly like that for the lucky person. stories would spread out about how the game has a secret glitch that is only on some pirated copies, that will cause massive word of mouth to go through the roof. it would also discourage people from pirating because they don't want the creepy part. it will be the best drm ever. too bad i will probably never make a game in my life. this drm is awesome too.
Bad move, Reminds me of how Valve fight piracy, by giving something to the customer that pirates cannot provide. This is just inviting people to pirate the game so that they get something the purchasable product doesn't provide.
Well, pirates just could use a health trainer/hack and continue playing the game...
but that would defeat the purpose of even getting the game because you could just sail through it with no difficulty it's not like people play serious sam for the story, mind you
Sounds overly complex, confusing, and kind of useless.
all that is needed is a random number picker and a cheap server that downloads a few files (it won't be overloaded because it would be rarely connected to, due to picking a small amount of numbers that are correct).

Instead I would use that development time for in game content and game play that makes people want to buy the game and not download it. DRM is stupid, waste of time, waste of resources. EVERY SINGLE GAME that is out has been cracked in some shape or form.

Honestly, that gameplay footage isn't making me want to get Serious Sam 3.

Trust me, I most definitely would.
Fun Fact: The game also crashes itself randomly if you pirated it. Also causes "Spinning Heads" in Chapter 4.
Best DRM ever was when the developer made the game around 2x as hard, and just near the end, before everything is revealed, the game cuts out and freezes. When you restart the game your save is gone.

"1-1,000,000,000" ok so basically you scripted this DRM that basically has 0.0000000001% likelyhood of doing a damn thing. I'd probably instead make it find out if its cracked, play normally, and when your just about to beat the last level, have a screamer pop up that sets all the audio to really loud, and goes from loud scream, to random obscured high pitched ear splitting noise, and then corrupts all the main game files. Problem solved. It'd be crackable, but you'd have no idea if it's cracked or not, so if you don't FULLY crack it, you'll suffer from it. Seriously, what would be more entertaining than the thought that the first people pirating the game will have the piss scared out of them?
In that video, it took the player a minute 40 to die from the scorpion, I think people will find ways to 'tank' it or avoid it.
One big flaw with ingame drm is that it confuses the potential buyer. Like with the batman case, people thought no gliding was a bug and said they won't buy it anymore because it's so buggy at release and untested blabla. Why can't games just release without drm anymore? And drm like in sam doesn't even stop day 1 piracy.

Also, it'll tell you if you have a non-cd key / pirate copy, and tell you that if you bought it, tell the devs, so people who did buy it don't get screwed.
