• Nvidia Display driver failure during games

My brother's computer has been having an issue when playing TF2 where the game will freeze up and show the picture of the head with the valve and repeatedly play the last second or so of the sound. Eventually the game will unfreeze and he can continue playing with no issues, but a bubble will pop up saying "display driver has stopped working and has recovered". This happens regularly whenever he plays. He is using windows vista and has an nVidia 9600gt with the latest drivers, we've tried downgrading the drivers to no avail. Does anyone know of a solution to this problem?
The few common suggestions would be to: - Update video driver - Turn down overclocks – GPU/CPU - Patch games - Check for overheating – case, GPU, CPU - Check that the video card isn't faulty
Video drivers are fully updated. No overclocks. TF2 autopatches. Temperatures are all normal according to speedfan. The video card plays TF2 with all settings on high at 1650x1080 at upwards of 60 FPS most of the time, so I doubt it's faulty. BTW, I'm OP's brother.

What did you downgrade to? I had the exact same problems, I'm running the old 186.18 now and it works fine.
Okay, I removed the drivers via device manager in order to install the old versions, now I'm just getting a "The system has not been modified" error whenever I try to install the new drivers.
Reboot and see if it works.
I downgraded, still crashes.
