Relax, Gabe Newell. If you buy a new Windows 8 Pro PC and discover that you really do detest the OSthat much, you may be able to switch back to an older version -- either Windows 7 or Vista, but not near-death XP -- under the same OEM license. Will many folks want to do that? Probably not, and in any case these so-called downgrade rights are actually only helpful in specific circumstances and they don't come with boxed retail versions of the software. The main practical benefit (albeit still a niche one) is that a manufacturer could technically offer a Windows 7 disc in the box with a new Windows 8 machine and give customers a choice of OS. Alternatively, the manufacturer could install Windows 7 by default (effectively a factory downgrade) and supply Windows 8 Pro installation media so that customers can upgrade for free when they feel good 'n ready. At some point, of course, staring at a redundant UI-switching button is going to grate.
How can you not like this
How nice of them.
Why did they use Vista as the photo then :?
Microsoft is such a bro these days, although I really want to give Windows 8 one or two months of testing before I decide if I like it or not.
My respect for Microsoft has just significantly increased.
Why did they use Vista as the photo then :?
Because you can downgrade to Windows 7 or Vista.
Microsoft: the king of backpedaling
wait no i didnt read the first sentence kill me
That's really nice of them.
God, that stock photo
"guys if you dont like W8, you can switch back to Vista lmao"
Why did they use Vista as the photo then :?
Because read the article.
How can you not like this
Because I already have Windows 7?
I mean I can see why you'd like this but there are still reasons not to like it.
Still have my 95 key.
Microsoft: the king of backpedaling
It's not meant for you, it's meant for those like Dell who can give the customers an easy choice between Windows 7 and 8.
That's insanely cool. Now I can buy a new PC in December without worrying my ass off about Win8.
It's not meant for you, it's meant for those like Dell who can give the customers an easy choice between Windows 7 and 8.
Yeah I said I'd see why people would like it, I was stating that for some people this means very little.
What if i already have win 7. This is just retarded. So the 5 people on XP and the 2 on Vista get a good deal. Awesome.
Try it for a month before completely dismissing it.
Most of the complaints you have heard are from people who fear change.
I haven't tried the RP yet, so I'll take your word for it.
Yeah I said I'd see why people would like it, I was stating that for some people this means very little.
So you don't like it because it doesn't affect you?
wat
What if i already have win 7. This is just retarded. So the 5 people on XP and the 2 on Vista get a good deal. Awesome.
The rest of the world doesn't mirror Facepunch. This will be good for a large number of people. It's just nice that Microsoft is allowing us to be flexible instead of force-feeding it to everybody.
It's like Microsoft knows their new OS is shit and nobody will want to use it...

why would you buy a more expensive Windows 8 key just to activate Windows 7 if you are upgrading from XP or vista
This is meant for people that sell computers so they can give their customers more options

Orr they know people have opinions!
Some people have to stick with Win7 for compatibility issues (whichever there are) and Microsoft are simply dealing with that
So you don't like it because it doesn't affect you?
wat
That's fine, what isn't is "It doesn't affect me so it shouldn't happen at all".

"This doesn't benefit me, so it's completely retarded". Also, that's not what the article says - maybe you should read it next fucking time before you make stupid comments.
Still have my 95 key.
Still have the original MS-DOS install floppies.

Just log out and never come back please. You're a fucking horrible poster.
This is quite a nice thing for MS to do, Windows 8 is pretty nice, I've been using it for two days now and I think I can safely say it's quite an improvement on laptops, it's faster, it boots ridiculously quickly, shuts down near instantly. The only compatibility issues I've had were a Intel graphics driver which was my fault for downloading the Windows 7 version.
Though I could possibly see why someone would stick to Windows 7 on a desktop, Metro is most certainly not a valid reason to do so.
Why is there a picture of vista ? this thread not about w8?
