The warnings came as freezing rain brought heavy ice accumulations from Atlanta to Charlotte. Across a large swath of the South, hundreds of thousands of people were without power and thousands of flights were canceled. Calling ice the biggest enemy, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency. School districts canceled classes and government offices were shuttered in an attempt to avoid a repeat of the traffic paralysis caused by a storm last month. Up to three-quarters of an inch of ice was expected to accumulate in Atlanta and up to 10 inches of snow and sleet were expected in Raleigh and Charlotte, making travel treacherous. Also in the storm's path were Virginia and Washington, with much of the Northeast to follow. All federal offices in the nation's capital were ordered closed, and thousands of employees were being told to stay home, according to the Office of Personnel Management.
I live in north-central Alabama, and I've never seen this much snow. It's.. beautiful. It's also hilarious because our governor is shitting himself and declaring a state of emergency over it, the list of school and business closings on my local news station is several pages long, and the high for saturday is 60 degrees. last night [t]https://scontent-b-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/t1/p180x540/1610072_1464818183729902_136687219_n.jpg[/t] Tonight. it's coming for the north east tonight help me
Oh now a few snowflakes, better shut down everything.
It will sometimes snow for a few hours near my house around this time of the year. I doubt it will this year, considering how warm it's getting. This climate change is getting freaky.
The real question here is how prepared is everyone? I know the South typically doesn't get any real accumulation of snow, but I'd also imagine a few of the citizens do use all seasons on their cars and should know that they should slow down in the bad weather. As far as houses tolerating the cold weather, they should also be insulated properly even to keep the cold in during the summer. I'm actually curious as to how you'll all take it, I figure it won't be too bad.

Im in NC currently, originally from northern Maine. We got about 6" of snow today. Pretty funny watching the news, theyre reporting it like its the end of the world. Traffic is bunged up everywhere, most drivers here have never seen snow in their life. I guess some people abandoned their cars on the interstates and such, which really doesnt help

I remembered how to drive on it so I didn't die but I did do a lot of sliding around because I don't have the tires for it. Also, a lot of people in the area don't have heaters in their homes. I've lived in 4 different houses down here and this is the only one that has a heater.
I've escaped to Florida at the perfect time I'm totally expecting to come home in 3 days to find my house completely snowed-in

Any decent all season would handle this snow fine, but when you work in the local garages or pay attention to peoples cars, youd see that many people ride around on bald tires without a single slivver of tread left. The newer houses and trailers here should do fine. Im personally renting an old trailer, its basically metal siding, 2x4's at best, and 1/8" wood on the inside. No insulation at all. Not doing bad currently [editline]13th February 2014[/editline]
Everyone around here uses either cheater slicks or old and bald hard compounds. it's nothing new to see the metal belt poking out of a tire around here. old bald tires grip fine on dry roads so we never really have much reason to get new tires
When i first moved to NC, i had tires with about 20% tread left. Went to a tire shop, said my tires are getting bald and i need new ones. They pretty much just laughed and said theyve got plenty left, and theyd actually resell them. All i can think is, no wonder people down here freak when it rains hard or snows, theyre all driving on slicks basically. Im used to keeping nice and meaty tires on so i can have some fun in the mud and snow

I'm in the Centerpoint/Pinson area just to the north east of Birmingham. From experience, I had to abandon my car on the side of the highway because other cars couldn't go up hills because of ice, drivers have no experience driving in ice either, they'd just slam on their breaks or floor it. I swear I saw atleast 10 accidents happen in a span of a minute.
Athens, Georgia here. Shut down completely Got an inch of ice on the road, only seen like maybe four or five people out today.

Ive done plenty of snow and ice driving to handle it, but about the only way to avoid other drivers mistakes is to stay home. According to my dad, who did go out today, he saw quite a bit of accidents and one that really stood out. A lady started sliding, so not only did she slam on her brakes, she floored it at the same time. Sat there a while doing a burnout before she launched into the trees
Oh now a few snowflakes, better shut down everything.
its been sleeting for a full day before the snow, meaning 1-3 inches of pure ice on the ground and roads, and since theres an assload of backroads and wooded areas in the south, it can take half a week before all of it is melted due to no salt/gravel or sunlight.
I actually have no tread left. I can't even do the penny test. this is fairly typical in this area.
Thats a big part of why there are so many traffic issues and crashes during these storms
Fuck, I should have just drove to my friends house. I walked 6 miles in foot deep snow to go sledding and have a snowball war. Took me 3 hours to get there and back, and my legs are completely useless now. After I got back I got in my truck and drove 2 miles to get some food with no problems at all. Sometimes you just get screwed trying to be careful.

Accidents like those are the reason why traffic was at a standstill in Georgia and possibly why at NC
well, we just had a minor storm here in miami, florida but thats basically it. Its still hot as balls here. I'll start worrying when the first drop of snow comes. Which it most likely won't seeing as we are basically next to the equator.
its always neat hearing about how people unused to dealing with snow reacting to it when it actually snows personally id be happy never seeing snow again
i was enjoying the snow until it started sleeting. so now there is a nice, solid layer of ice over the snow. great. this shit's gonna stick around for a while.
Downtown Atlanta reporting in. The major streets and the highway have been salted. There isn't much to do as restaurants and businesses have mostly shut down. I've resorted to drinking.
You guys got it bad. Be thankful you didn't get those crazy arctic temps like we got here in Chicago.
7+ inches of snow here in Tennessee. Please send help. I am literally a popsicle.
I can't wait for Ragnarök to get here sooner :) {the 22nd of this month} http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ragnarök
We're supposed to get like 1-2 feet of snow where I live. Generator doesn't work so if we lose power... we're sol.
to anyone in the southeast: will trade 1 30rd mag of 7.62x39 or 5.45x39 for s brick of velveeta will trade 70rds of 12ga for a 10lb bag of potatos will trade a pair of deactivated RGB grenade for a set of snowchains
Huntsville is where I'm at :c And my fucking power just went out. Holy shit this is the end
Oh now a few snowflakes, better shut down everything.
They aren't equipped for that kind of weather, it's highly unusual, try doing some research instead of talking out of your ass.
