• Morrisons to remove coin-activated locks from their trollies - as nearly half of customers don't lik

The supermarket chain Morrisons says it will be removing the locks from 150,000 coin-activated shopping trolleys nationwide. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-magazine-monitor-28246733 If they don't exist outside of the UK, basically you put a £1 coin into the trolley and it releases the lock, when you return the trolley, you get the £1 back. It's to stop being leaving trolleys in the middle of the car park. [editline]10th July 2014[/editline]
They should have stuck to their guns on this.
We have these at No Frills and stuff like that and there isn't really a problem, the only ones it causes a problem to are those who plan on stealing the trolly, and even then you can always break open the thing to get your quarter back.
People leave them fucking everywhere when they don't require coins, seriously. One of the local Tesco used to not need them, was a nightmare. Keep the locks, you can always get change inside if you don't have it (though seriously, most people have £1 in their wallet for this purpose, or one of the keyring coin things for this purpose)
They have this at budget grocery chains in the seedier areas here in Orlando, I remember being severely perplexed the first time I saw them. The only difference is here they don't give you your quarter back
Scrabbling around in cars and searching through wallets and purses for spare change is something few of us can afford in our time-pressed lives, says Morrisons' chief executive Dalton Philips.
Imagine not being intelligent enough to keep a coin in your car at all times for the shopping cart.
Most people have something like this which goes on their keys:
Imagine not being intelligent enough to keep a coin in your car at all times for the shopping cart.
Not to mention the fact you need change for car parking unless in a major city (where you can sometimes pay by phone) and also things like the dartford tunnel.
You know I'm pretty sure you can just jam these things with a key or something anyway, so it's entirely your fault if you fuck up and can't get one.
Almost all of the shopping centers in western Canada use coin locks. Over here though you just feed it 25 cents.

actually these exist in the U.S. but usually they are small denominations like a quarter or a nickle, most places that had these were just worried about their carts being stolen by homeless, the guys who still use them have probably replaced them with better systems since then [editline]10th July 2014[/editline] usually these are at low-end shopping centers like aldies though, walmart and their boundless supply of plastic carts has killed most of those off
Almost all of the shopping centers in western Canada use coin locks. Over here though you just feed it 25 cents.
Here in the Midwestern US, I've only seen Aldi's use them. They're pretty unique in that respect.

How did I unlock them? With a locker key. Not any special kind of dohickey or anything. Just a locker key, or anything that can fit in the hole and press the lock release.
Aldi's do this but it's 25 cents not 1 dollar 71 cents, and it works fine
You have Aldi in America?
Aldi's are all over the US, most of Europe and Australia.
Aldi's do this but it's 25 cents not 1 dollar 71 cents, and it works fine
The UK ones take £1 because they also take 1€ coins too
Let's all take a moment to appreciate that you have to be a piece of shit to leave your cart randomly in the parking lot for wind to blow it into someone's car. =)
That's weird as fuck. I thought they were only in the UK. They're known for being cheapo here.
Mate, they're a German chain, just like Lidl. They're worldwide, and Aldi is growing insanely fast.
I hate carrying change, it constantly falls backwards out of my pockets and gets lodged in the seats.
Aldi and Lidl are pretty much everywhere, not really surprised they are in the US. Still back onto the coin lock removal, it's a fucking dumb idea. Both ASDA and a few Tesco's around me dont have them and you always find the fucking trolleys everywhere but where the stores are. I've found them in housing estates, fucking middle of the road on the main roads, in the middle of the fucking park, in a car park thats a good fucking walk away from where the store is, in the shopping centre that is yet another good fucking walk away from the store and in rivers because you're never complete without a fucking trolley sat in the damn river. Keep the fucking coin locks.
Am I the only one who actually dislikes these? I hate carrying change around in my pocket, and since getting a debit card I rarely have any cash on me in the first place. If I want to go to Sainsbury's to get some groceries on the way home and I don't have a pound I have to get a £10 note from the ATM and waste 40p or so on a packet of gum just so that I can get £1 and an assortment of 10p and 20ps in change. Just do what most big supermarkets do now and have a magnetic trolley lock at the end of the car parks. The ALDI I go to near me doesn't have these £1 slots and I've never seen a trolley astray in the car park there.
Here in the Midwestern US, I've only seen Aldi's use them. They're pretty unique in that respect.
yeah, ALDI is the only place I've seen them. The reason they use it is because it's a small employee-run store and they don't want to pay for an extra employee to be on hand to be wrangling them up. Customers return the carts to the line and order is kept at no cost being inside an ALDI weirds me out though
Am I the only one who actually dislikes these? Grab a quarter, there HAS to be something at home or floating around in your car
Let's all take a moment to appreciate that you have to be a piece of shit to leave your cart randomly in the parking lot for wind to blow it into someone's car. =)
The only thing that grinds my gears more than people who leave their carts where-ever in a parking lot, are those who take their cart to the till and rather than putting it inside where it fucking belongs they just slam it into the sides of it like "Oh well close enough XD".
You have Aldi in America?
ya they're on their way out though as even cheaper chains like family dollar, dollar general and wallmart's mini walmarts eat into their market, they only make it because you can pretty much buy everything there with EBT cards (food stamps for you foreigners)
most places that had these were just worried about their carts being stolen by homeless, the guys who still use them have probably replaced them with better systems since then
Our Albertsons have boots around one of the wheels that brake lock it if it leaves the premise.
Over here major companies had to replace the 1€ lock with plastic brand-coin lock because the homeless and the illegals would stalk people in the parking lot and harass them for their 1€.
