Police said the citizen brought the hand grenade to police for disposal around 10:30 a.m. Sunday. They did not say why the person had the grenade in the first place.
20$ says its a dummy that someone in the family owned, and they found in a box in the attic the article doesn't say if it was a live grenade or not, just that they rendered it safe which could mean a lot of things [editline]6th December 2015[/editline] someday people will remember to call the cops about the potentially live explosives before they throw it in their trunk and drive it to a police station
Police said the grenade never made it into police station but remained in the person’s vehicle outside. The device was rendered safe by authorities shortly before 3 p.m., and the roads and stores were allowed to reopen.
Guess its protocol?
They could have gone to that lake in Brightwood, pulled the pin and tossed it out a ways. If it was live, it would have gone off and killed a few fish. If it was a decoy, nothing would've happened. Problem solved.

More enjoyment for the people watching too. Make a day out of it. Put in some pony rides, call up a balloon clown, get a food truck to stop by... Market it as a "Come see stuff blow up... Or not! Day." Fun and excitement for the whole family.
I'm pretty sure using explosives near fish isn't legal, nor safe for anything living in the lake.
You're thinking about this too hard. Simple, fun solutions to problems are always legal. Like prostitution and getting the people in front of you to leave the movie theater by screaming "fire" and throwing a match. Both are legal 100% of the time.
Guess its protocol?
Of course it is for any potential explosive.

Also if you mess up and accidentally drop it you're fucked.
Or they could just unscrew the fuse and not have to blow anything up. Assuming it's a live grenade.
Or blow up in your hand.
Or blow up in your hand.
If the spoon and pin are still in it that's highly unlikely. Unless it's an incredibly old grenade whose explosive material has become chemically unstable.
the article doesn't say if it was a live grenade or not, just that they rendered it safe which could mean a lot of things
'Rendered safe' is cop speak for 'We blew it the fuck up'.
I'm pretty sure using explosives near fish isn't legal, nor safe for anything living in the lake.
Someone would probably phone the police too since a hand grenade exploding would be pretty loud. [editline]8th December 2015[/editline]
Of course it is for any potential explosive.
Safety first.
