And as we head into the last stretch, it seems Microsoft has released to manufacturing (RTMed) Windows 8.1, its next release of Windows. Windows SuperSite editor Paul Thurrott tweeted on August 23 that Windows 8.1 had RTM'd. Thurrott said the final RTM build number is 9600.16384.130821-1623. I talked to another contact of mine who said the internal RTM e-mail made the rounds inside the Windows division on August 23. A third source close to the company confirmed Microsoft RTM'd Windows 8.1 on August 23, and announced internally that the quality metrics for Windows 8.1 were back in line with those of Windows 7. (The vast amount of changes in the Windows 8 code base resulted in an increased number of crashes and hangs for Windows 8, one of my contacts explained.)
RIP Microsoft
RIP Microsoft
Is this bad? I know stuff like OEM but what does RTM mean and is it bad
Is this bad? I know stuff like OEM but what does RTM mean and is it bad
It clearly says in the OP.
it seems Microsoft has released to manufacturing (RTMed)

It clearly says in the OP.
But is it bad? I'm sorry for my high levels of ignorance, but I'm clueless.
It just means they're releasing it to various manufacturers, meaning they can iron out any bugs before the general public gets a hold of it. Right? Just means progress.
Prepare for thousands of "Blue Screen of Death" jokes.
It just means they're releasing it to various manufacturers, meaning they can iron out any bugs before the general public gets a hold of it. Right?
meaning manufactures can start loading it onto new PCs and sell them alongside the GA release
RIP Microsoft
what
I have been using 8.1 Preview for a while now and I haven't had too many problems with it. There were a few crashes of Explorer but they resolved themselves quickly. Other than that I haven't had anymore issues. I doubt that the RTM version will be much worse. Plus this makes Windows 8 worth using: http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/
what
Really Inspirational People
Is this bad? I know stuff like OEM but what does RTM mean and is it bad
He's being a whiny bitch because Microsoft is still going ahead with Windows 8. Don't ask him why, he's probably not going to be able to answer with anything other than "muh start menu"
The only problem I have had with the 8.1 preview is that sometimes when I click Desktop off of a fresh boot-up; it will not show the desktop on my second monitor and I have to open the start menu on that monitor and click desktop. Sometimes that happens. Not a dealbreaker.

Show desktop when logging is now an option where the old start menu options used to be.
Shit, I so much want the transparency back. But Start button and loading into desktop directly is great too.

I am sorry but what exactly does RTM stand for? [editline]25th August 2013[/editline] I guess it is like BSOD?
You can disable Charms now? That's a step in the right direction. Now I just want the start screen to be optimised for mouse control. I don't care if it's a menu or a screen, but when I right-click an item I want the menu to appear where I clicked, not at the bottom of the screen.

Also they should improve the search function. I want to search in everything at once instead of having to select between files, programs and whatever the other categories are. edit: my automerge
Also they should improve the search function. I want to search in everything at once instead of having to select between files, programs and whatever the other categories are. edit: my automerge
That's not that simple. Searching in "everything" including files means you have to do quite extensive scanning through the disk, whereas looking through just installed programs is as easy as reading a bit through the registry file. If you ask for a program in a "full" search, it will be unnecessarily slowed down/loading the HDD pointlessly.

So this will have DirectX 11.2, right? Welp, guess it's time to upgrade
Plus this makes Windows 8 worth using: http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/
Having to buy an addon in order to get Windows working = that version of windows is broken.
Having to buy an addon in order to get Windows working = that version of windows is broken.
Um it works perfectly fine without it as well. It's not broken, you just have a different preference as to how it should be.
Um it works perfectly fine without it as well. It's not broken, you just have a different preference as to how it should be.
Nah. It's broken. Broken by design, matter of fact. Some things just work and don't need to be mucked with, yet Microsoft opted to muck with them anyway. Far as I'm concerned Win8 doesn't exist. IF I have to buy and install a third party mod to get Windows to work like it's supposed to, and has for the past 20 or 30 years now, that version of windows is broken. It may work for you but to me it is and always will be a broken pile of crap that has no business on my hard drive.
It may work for you but to me it is and always will be a broken pile of crap that has no business on my hard drive.
This is my point exactly. Preference. Unless you can objectively prove how it is any worse (completely disregarding preference), I don't see what we're arguing here.
