Hey, folks of Facepunch! I've started work (with garry's blessing) on a true wonder of these ages: Facepunch for mobile browsers! You might be thinking "D'eh, here's another project that will soon fail and fall back to the oblivion!". Well, let's hope not. By the way, this time we're not coming out with an iPhone app or whatever but we're doing this how it is supposed to be done-through the use of CSS and Media Queries (if you don't know what these things are, have fun looking them up). I think it's pretty safe to say that garry will implement this if it doesn't fuck with the forum's normal appearance and content, which we'll try to avoid. So, after a first day of very intense work and notable amounts of tears I can present you the first early draft of the mobile homepage. And trust me, we're just getting started! P.S.: By the way, you can watch the progress on GitHub! Visit us here. Whatever happened to Hexxeh's app? But this is awesome too. Good job, guys
Whatever happened to Hexxeh's app? But this is awesome too. Good job, guys
Didn't hexxeh get perma'd? No point making something for a website that doesn't want you right.
Whatever happened to Hexxeh's app? But this is awesome too. Good job, guys
Hexxeh's had an issue with IAP.
So this IS coming to android too right? o.O
Didn't hexxeh get perma'd? No point making something for a website that doesn't want you right.
No, he's still a mod. I think your thinking of compwhizii
No, he's still a mod. I think your thinking of compwhizii
I'd never mistake hexxeh for comp :P, I must've misread somewhere.
So this IS coming to android too right? o.O
As long as your Android device supports CSS.
Whatever happened to Hexxeh's app? But this is awesome too. Good job, guys
Hexxeh got busy with university and real work and Garry removed the API so the working beta we had (which was amazing) no longer works.
I'd never mistake hexxeh for comp :P, I must've misread somewhere.
you're thinking of hexxy
I'm still here... :v: My app got tangled up in an argument with Apple regarding use of in-app purchases. I never had time in the summer to convert it to use an external payment system since I was taking part in Google Summer of Code. garry decided to remove the API given I couldn't commit time in the near future to making these changes to the app. Also, CSS stylesheets used to do things like this are cool, but they're still going to eat bandwidth just like viewing the full site. A better approach would be to do what some folks in the Programming forum are doing and scrape the site, then provide an API that allows data-light interaction with it.
you're thinking of hexxy
do you mean hezzy?
do you mean hezzy?
whoops, ya.
you're thinking of hexxy
No I was just being silly for a moment, like usually when I open my mouth.
http://eewai.com/facepunch/ http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1057960 I like Pocoyo's mobile site, works great on my android.
Brilliant.. looking forward to this
Let's face it, in today's world bandwidth consumption, even on mobile devices, isn't really much of a big problem anymore.
Try using it on a GPRS connection and then tell me that. It's less about the bandwidth usage, but more about the bandwidth of the connection you're using it on, and hence the experience using the forums. Before I moved to university, I had GPRS coverage pretty much everywhere near where I lived, no 3G in sight. Maybe in some countries 3G coverage is much better, but there are still plenty of areas where it's not. Interesting speed comparison here, between a browser based system and a properly optimised API based application: As a side note, should a proper web-based API ever be developed (the efforts seen in the programming forum could be used to this effect) I might pick this application up again and make it work with a new API. Either that or I might just open source it, let's see.
For some of us with our lightinign fast 4G speeds, speed isn't that much of a problem. It's mostly about the look.
Oh god, I remember making that video. I must get around to making one that's a little fairer (like using ctrl+F5 for non-cache loads) and also maybe with a proper mobile web browser version (especially this one if it ever comes around to it). From what I remember using of the FP for iPhone app, it was fucking fast in comparison to using a browser, and hell do I miss it now I'm on Android.
Facepunch works perfectly on my phone even with the snow which I am grateful for. I have the Galaxy P1000, works a treat.
Let's face it, in today's world bandwidth consumption, even on mobile devices, isn't really much of a big problem anymore.
Not everyone has unlimited data these days, and opening the facepunch home page can use quite a bit of data usage.
I'd never mistake hexxeh for comp :P, I must've misread somewhere.
You're mistaking him for Hezzy.
You're mistaking him for Hezzeh.
Hezzy, and no.
Let's face it, in today's world bandwidth consumption, even on mobile devices, isn't really much of a big problem anymore.
2GB of data for $30 on Verizon. It's a big problem for some people now that Verizon switched from unlimited.

[editline]20th December 2011[/editline] And you aren't on Skype so, try and make the forum titles span the full width instead of wrapping. [editline]20th December 2011[/editline] Some of the borders are also doubling because you've removed the margin so I'd suggest removing them and the left border.
You might be thinking "D'eh, here's another project that will soon fail and fall back to the oblivion!". Well, let's hope not.
How convincing. No really, this is awesome. Way better than a dedicated app. Don't make it oversimplified like most mobile sites, and have at least most features available. And make switching to nonmobile view work. Just a couple of requests.
