The Tiers of Metal v1
I won't be able to update this thread, it seems. Facepunch posts more often than I can update.
This is now a metal opinions thread or something.
So, this thread is simple really. You suggest metal bands and I place them in a tier. Of course, you suggest the tier too. It's not an opinion thread.
The tiers I have come up with (yes, me. All by myself. Isn't that good? I think it is) are as follows:
Classics Tier: This is reserved for the Gods of metal. The bands who invented metal, the bands you think of when someone mentions the genre.
God Tier: I made this seperate from the classics tier. This is basically the same, except for modern bands rather than "classic" bands.
Just below God but above good tier: It's just below God but above good.
Good Tier: Bands you think are good, but not good enough to be called God tier.
Meh/Average Tier: Average bands that aren't particularly special in any way but are still good.
Below Average Tier: It's the below average tier, and that's why it comes below the average tier. Bands that are... well, below average.
Crap Tier: Bands that are crap, always have been crap, and most likely will always be crap.
OH GOD I DON'T WANT TO LIVE ON THIS PLANET ANYMORE Tier: The worst of the worst. Bands you can not tolerate. (Note; a truly bad band does not go here if it fits into one of the special tiers.)
SPECIAL TIERS
Limp-wristed Tier: Bands that could be good but are ruined by the emo/scene fanbase.
Depressing Tier: Bands that produce utterly depressing music.
Abortion Tier: Bands that fuse metal with another genre and fail at it.
I Listened To Them When They Were Good Tier: Bands that used to be good, but aren't any more.
One Good Song Tier: Bands that are mostly shit but have one or two songs you like.

Good - Mastodon
Meh - Anthrax
Below Average - Delain
Special Place In My Heart Because It's What Got Me Into Metal Tier - Dragonforce
This thread will be torn apart by opinions.
Also, whats the point of having 'v1' in the end if this isn't going to make it past 10 pages?
Anyways, Judas Priest and Black Sabbath for Classics Tier, Dream Theater, Symphony X and Tool for God tier and Transatlantic and Liquid Tension Experiment for Good Tier.
By the way I'm only gonna put certain ones in from each post because obviously there will be conflict.
Limp-wristed Tier: Bands that could be good but are ruined by the emo/scene fanbase.
Worst tier
Who gives a fuck about their fanbase
And how exactly do you intend to determine what band goes up?
:raise:
Classic Tier - Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Megadeth
God Tier - Myrath, Tool, Alice in Chains (Grunge-Metal)
Good Tier - Killswitch Engage
Meh Tier - Disturbed
I Listened to Them When They Were Good - Metallica
I'll update when I'm not busy.
Anyways:
Just-Below-God-But-Above-Good Tier - In Mourning, Alley, Deus Ex Machina, Allegaeon, Barren Earth, Burden of Grief, In Grief, Fractal Gates, Scar Symmetry, Atrophia Red Sun
Good Tier - Solution .45, Dark Tranquillity, Dark Lunacy, Blind Stare, Aeveron, Path of Golconda, Anterior, Arch Enemy, Becoming the Archetype, Chaos Divine, Dark Age, Deals Death, Embryo, Gardenian, Instant Suppression, Kiana, Kreator, A Losing Season, Lost Dreams, Moredhel, Odium, Zonaria.
All I'm gonna bother putting up right now. :colbert:
Anyways:
Just-Below-God-But-Above-Good Tier
I added that tier.
Also thanks for suggesting so many.
And I will be adding bands to tiers if someone hasn't already mentioned them, and I'll move them if there is a majority vote to do so.
Well, we have 2 votes for Tool to God Tier already, but it isn't up there.
Well, we have 2 votes for Tool to God Tier already, but it isn't up there.
Not entirely sure why I didn't add them before, added them to God tier.
Classics Tier: Atheist, Melvins, Carcass, Death
God Tier: Cynic, Isis, At The Gates, Godflesh
Just below God but above good tier: Sólstafir, The Ocean, Between the Buried and Me
Good Tier: High on Fire, Amorphis, Protest the Hero
Meh Tier: System of a Down
Crap Tier: Avenged Sevenfold
In my opinion Amorphis should belong to "Just below God but above Good tier".
Yeah. Amorphis are a fantastic band. But I don't quite think they have done enough to earn God Teir.
[editline]9th February 2011[/editline]
Also Mastodon sould be God Tier. For their newest album at least.
In my opinion Amorphis should belong to "Just below God but above Good tier".
It's all just a matter of opinions. I personally preferred Pasi Koskinen over Joutsen as their vocalist, so their new stuff didn't really catch on me.
How :pcgaming:
because I like Pasi's voice? :colbert:
I like Joutsen more.
Same.
Joutsen has one of the best voices I've heard imo.
God Tier - 3 Inches of Blood, Alice in Chains, Meshuggah, ISIS.
Good Tier - Mr. Bungle, Pantera, Lamb of God, Rage Against the Machine, System of a Down.
I Listened to Them Before They Were Good Tier - Slipknot, Linkin Park (Or Corky's 'special place in my heart' tier)
One Good Song Tier - Stone Sour (a couple, actually)
Limp-Wristed Tier - Marilyn Manson (arguably)
Gonna get a fair amount of disagrees, methinks.
God Tier: Steel Panther :v:
God Tier: Steel Panther :v:
Death To All But Metal Tier - Steel Panther
I listened to them when they were good tier - Children of Bodom, Dimmu Borgir
Classic tier - Mayhem, Burzum, Bathory
Bodom aren't good anymore?
Bodom aren't good anymore?
They never were :smug:
Bodom aren't good anymore?
Hate Crew Deathroll was the last album they made that I enjoy all the songs on. After that it just went downhill with the exception of a few songs from Blooddrunk. Plus the majority of Bodom's fanbase sucks these days.
-snip-
God tier - Death, Entombed, Bolt Thrower, Celtic Frost (could all be arguably classics), Bloodbath
Just-below-god-but-above-good-tier - Gojira, Agalloch, Sonata Arctica, Alcest, Dissection, Nevermore
Good tier - Black Pyramid, Carcass, Eluveitie, Kalmah
Depressing tier - Gris, Leviathan, Austere, Silencer, Anti
I Listened To Them When They Were Good tier - In Flames
