• Resources/Ideas For Getting A First Job?

I've been looking all over and can't seem to find anything I can do. I'm a certified wild land firefighter and have experience working for the Department of Natural Resources on a DNR handcrew, which consists mostly of hiking up hills in the middle of nowhere and cutting shit with a chainsaw. I also have some experience working in a kitchen as a KA, washing everything and taking out the garbage. I've looked around and everyone wants a fucking resume, which I don't fucking have and on top of that, every entry level job is a fucking sales position. This is probably not the best idea in the world, asking for help with a job on Facepunch but, I don't know what else to do. I need some help.
everyone wants a fucking resume, which I don't fucking have
Get up off your backside and make one then.
Write up a resume? Or just take the sales jobs?
You need a resume. Without job experience it's tough, so focus on what skills you have and your education history. Just google "writing a first resume" or something along those lines.
Get up off your backside and make one then.
Did it ever occur to you that I might not know how to make one?
Did it ever occur to you that I don't know how to make one?
Like googling "how to make a resume" is so hard
How many of you actually have jobs or have worked? [editline]29th July 2013[/editline] Just out of curiosity.

I know OP isn't a minor but I'm guessing there are minors here in the same situation. My advice to you: familiarize yourself with what rights you have as an employee. Too many kids don't think about it and are underpaid, denied their legally mandated breaks, asked to do unsafe work, or otherwise exploited. In many cases you're allowed to refuse to do any work that you feel is unsafe or that you're not trained for. Brush up on local labour laws, company policies, and if your workplace is unionized, union policies. Especially the first and the latter, you're paying taxes and union dues to support those resources so make use of them.

It's a lot harder for me to find a job than everyone else, and "everyone else" is having a hard time finding jobs too.
I'm a felon. It's a lot harder for me to find a job than everyone else, and "everyone else" is having a hard time finding jobs too.
probably should've mentioned that in the OP
when you go to hand in your application, ask to speak to the manager directly and let them know that you're a felon. if you don't, then they will see it on your application first and automatically assume the worst about you because they haven't had the chance to see how you really are. i mean, i'm not a felon myself, but this makes sense to me.
How many of you actually have jobs or have worked? [editline]29th July 2013[/editline] Just out of curiosity.
I got my first job, in fast food, when I was 16, ask friends with jobs to put in a word for you, make a resume (seriously, use google to figure out how or use a MS Word template, it's easy) and get out there and apply to places.
I'm a felon.
That's kind of an oops How hard is it to get a pardon in the states? You're 18 so I assume you did whatever it was you did as a minor
That's kind of an oops How hard is it to get a pardon in the states? You're 18 so I assume you did whatever it was you did as a minor
A pardon? [editline]29th July 2013[/editline] If you mean get my record sealed, I can't do that for 2 years after I'm off paper. I'm on parole till the 15th of next month and then I'll be back on probation till I'm 19 and a half. So 2 years after that I can get it sealed.
what did you do...
You didn't think mentioning that you are a felon was relevant...? What was it for?

Just google how to format it and you should be fine. I've literally made one up within 10-30 minutes and i've had a few jobs, school, and tons of certifications and awards. Also may i ask what you got convicted of and how much time you did? I always find it interesting because I used to work with as a correctional officer. After seeing your FB link i dunno if you're trolling or not.
That's kind of an oops How hard is it to get a pardon in the states? You're 18 so I assume you did whatever it was you did as a minor
non violent felony can be sealed after 5 years, violent felony requires special circumstances. most job applications specifically ask for felony convictions within the last 5 to 7 years though
also here's the deal unless you're amazingly lucky (and that felony conviction isn't going to help) you're going to start at entry level sales also ready let's make a resume right now Lord Crypto ======== Qualifications: Confirmed Goldmember on Facepunch studios as of 4-5-11 Epic Poster Skills: Video Editing 300 WPM Office Suite Employment History: wow look i wonder what goes here obviously this isn't the exact format of a resume, but you get how it works do you not
there are a billion resume templates out there as well. microsoft word comes with several.
I'm really not sure how it hard it would be in the states. There are some things you need to consider if you apply for a job. It's everything from having the right papers to how you look and how you speak that matters. is there no job helpdesk near you? Maybe you register on a career agency where they take part of the job searching process. Just try to prepare yourself

I didn't think Lol would be someones profile page name. I've updated it, if you're curious. I was charged with Burg II and Mal Mish I when I was 15, Theft II when I was 16 and another Theft II when I was 17. I also have numerous AS4-DVs and a few Theft IIIs. I did 9 months for the Burg II and Mal Mish I, 30 days for the Theft II + 15 for a P.V, and 7 months for the other Theft II, I got out February 15th. The military was my first option, but from what I've read, I don't think any branch will take me. Also says that on my paperwork. [editline]30th July 2013[/editline] Washington State, btw.
You're gonna need a resume, but everyone else has already said that. Still go do it though.
What do you mean by a job helpdesk and a career agency?
If you have problems finding a job or are not sure what you want to do you can go to a helpdesk office where they give you suggestions or tell you how to properly apply for a job. A career agency searches for jobs that match you and help you get in contact with employer. Sometimes for free sometimes you pay a little sum of money. [editline]30th July 2013[/editline] Also I'm not sure about the terms for these. Maybe they're called different in the states.
