http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8199951.stm
A new study suggests that people from different cultures read facial expressions differently. East Asian participants in the study focused mostly on the eyes, but those from the West scanned the whole face. In the research carried out by a team from Glasgow University, East Asian observers found it more difficult to distinguish some facial expressions. The work published in Current Biology journal challenges the idea facial expressions are universally understood. In the study, East Asians were more likely than Westerners to read the expression for "fear" as "surprise", and "disgust" as "anger". The researchers say the confusion arises because people from different cultural groups observe different parts of the face when interpreting expression. Western participants tended to scan the whole face East Asians participants tended to focus on the eyes of the other person, while Western subjects took in the whole face, including the eyes and the mouth.
Considering what I know about psychology and neurology, this tells me that the differences between cultures and art between different civilizations may be genetic in origin or in part, considering that the brain's structure for interpretation of any sort of data is hard-coded in the Hippocampus. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippocampus In other words, this may explain why everything in japan is so frigging weird - it may be genetic differences in our brain. On the bad side, it gives people an excuse to be racist.
This could be the reason why Anime characters have eyes the size of baseballs.
I thought this was common knowledge?
This could be the reason why Anime characters have eyes the size of baseballs.
Now it makes sense.
because asians can't see the whole face lolol
Do you pay attention to people's ears when you're talking to them? Same concept.
I look at people's hair.
because asians can't see the whole face lolol
Hey guess what, You're not funny :buddy:
I stare into their SOUL. Much more captivating.
i look at their rack.
Didn't some other scientist say this, and then he got hounded and had to apologise? And I really hope this doesn't just turn into some Asian eye joke thread.
Asian people see life in widescreen.
well the article was about how asians dont know how to read people's faces normally, so this also explains why they cant drive. They dont even look at the road or other people, they just watch their foot press the gas pedal.

But this is relatively harmless, it's not necessarily going to spark an intellectual time bomb.
I don't think the eyes contribute to this. :/
I don't think the eyes contribute to this. :/
Yeah because eyes aren't apart of the face or anything.
Yeah because eyes aren't apart of the face or anything.
i wonder if the flipped eye effect is behind anything :v:
Asian people see life in widescreen.
Also, remotely interesting is that apparently this guy... ...is a stereotypical American.

When I talk to people, I stare at their chest.
When I talk to people, I don't know where to look at.
When I talk to people, I don't know where to look at.
Same here. I look at eyes first then i'm like oh eh fuck shit and i look all over the room. :frown:
This could be the reason why Anime characters have eyes the size of baseballs.
It all makes sense now...
Same here. I look at eyes first then i'm like oh eh fuck shit and i look all over the room. :frown:
Then they think you're bullshitting or something. It's sort of awkward for me to stare someone in the eyes and talk to them.
