Prescription drug abuse is rampant, and for a third of Americans, the first drug of any kind that they take—including illicit drugs—is an Rx that has not been prescribed to them. That’s not surprising when you consider how many students abuse ADHD drugs for performance. But new research shows that recreational use of smart drugs comes at a cost.
Well maybe you'll forget you have ADHD.

I hate it when I have to read the story before making a judgment and commenting on it
I have adhd and I have p bad memory.
Maybe the medication is the reason behind it(?)
People will always look for the cheap trick and the easy solution.
So what about those who don't have ADHD and still have a bad memory?
I know i have a shit and super selective memory.

You just have bad memory. Not everything has to have a label on it.

SSSMD (Shit and Super Selective Memory Disorder/Shitty Super Selective Memory Disorder)
So pretty much it's saying "yo these prescription medications which weren't prescribed to you for a medical condition you don't have may not be good for you"
Dude, hold the fucking phone, you mean i shouldn't go down a bottle of Vicodin my mom got from her surgery?
i took ADHD drugs in 4th and 5th grade.
i stopped taking them in 6th grade and i suddenly got good grades

You stop taking the drugs because you forgot to since your memory got so bad from actually taking them. That's the first case I've heard of a drug becoming self-controlled. Amazing.

Hey!I'm looking for good excuses for me just fucking up/forgetting things too! Treating "memory" like it's some faulty hardware thing and not a complicated process that involves self-discipline is always a good one.
I take concerta and I have really fucking terrible memory. Oh shiiiiieet

When I was in kindergarten the teachers assumed I had ADHD because I wouldn't hold still and I wouldn't read their books, and I would try and talk to the other students. The kicker is they wouldn't set me up to get tested for ADHD until I was put on medication for it. :downs:
Thankfully they never did. The reason I wouldn't stay still in class and would try talking to other kids rather than reading the books they assigned is because I already knew how to do all that shit and it was boring me to tears.

You probably did not have ADHD then and were misdiagnosed by either a less than stellar doctor or a doctor who wanted to get paid for writing you a subscription to a drug for a medical condition that's heavily misdiagnosed solely for profit.

get tested for an iron deficiency. Iron + B12 supplements will make up for a good amount of what could be falsely blamed on AD(H)D

No it was because you were too squirmy and couldn't shut up. You were in Kindergarten dude, your undisciplined behavior was not the result of being "too smart" like the source of 99% of all internet users' problems ever. It was because you were in Kindergarten and you had poor discipline.
Ritalin from 3th grade till 5th grade.
Fuck me, I do have an extremely shitty memory. Can't remember things people told me 1 minute ago.

You're really expecting a fucking kindergartner to have self-discipline?
No. But I expect you to read posts before replying to them.

Man I took that shit from like grade 2-11.
I don't want to make a WebMD style self diagnosis here, but I can't even plan more than a day or so in advance (not that I'm trying to), and I forget what I'm getting at mid sentence (I'm sure this is common though).
I'm kind of conflicted where I stand here, as I stay as skeptical as possible on self diagnosis. This shit does sound familiar though.
I've seen chronic short term memory loss, the guy depended on a little notepad he carried around to remember what he had to do when he got to where he was going. While I have a poor short term memory, it's not that bad. Though I did buy a notepad and it helps.
Honestly doesn't seem to strongly correlate to adhd or add in my opinion. However i'm not a doctor.
If you wish to get on medication though do not outright ask for a perscription from your general practitioner/family doctor. Instead ask for a referral to a specialist who will give you more specific tests as well as meeting with you to determine if you do actively suffer from ADHD/ADD.
It's been really misconstrued what is and isn't adhd/add mostly thanks to the over prescription of the medication but there is a fairly large amount of deviation between adhd/add cases and just depression or lack of interest.
This explains a ton. Doctor prescribed ADHD meds to me when I was 12, and I have issue remembering things these days. It makes work really hard. :(
I took Ritalin during my final year at highschool for my ADD because I got sick of failing classes.
My short term memory definitely got screwed up from taking it. I can see why my mum didn't want me to take the stuff.
Interesting to note the study wasn't done with any amphetamines, so if you took Desoxyn, Adderall or Dexedrine (or anything else that is amphetamine), it doesn't necessarily apply to you.

I was a rather disciplined child. Couple of good smacks from a drunken step-father tend to do that.
The teacher thought I was literally retarded because I refused to read any of those old "See Spot Run" books, so she called my mom out there to have a talk with her. Needless to say Ma wasn't particularly happy to have a teacher tell her that her son was deficient, so she told me to grab a book and read it.
I went behind the teacher's desk and grabbed a "grown-up" book about dinosaurs and proceeded to read the shit out of it at a level far above that of a kindergartner.
I'm not saying I'm the next Tesla or Einstein, just providing yet another anecdote that the school system (or "the system" in general) tends to lead to conclusions about what's really going on when they may not be entirely accurate.
Holy shit, no wonder my memory has been worsening since middle school. Hooray, no early onset of Alzheimer's!
really feel like a ton of people self diagnose or ask for ritalin so they can have an excuse to be an annoying shit
I've met at least one kid during highschool who did exactly this. He acted completely spastic and punched people for no reason and his excuse was that he had ADHD. Of course he didn't take anything for it.
It was pretty embarrassing being lumped together with this guy under the same umbrella.
I've been taking concerta since 3rd grade and my short-term and long-term memory are just fine so I don't think it affected me. Or maybe I don't remember what it was like to truly remember.
