SEOUL, South Korea
A law under consideration in South Korea's parliament has sparked vociferous debate by grouping popular online games such as "StarCraft" with gambling,
drugs and alcohol as an anti-social addiction the government should do more to stamp out.
The bill is winning support from parents, religious groups and doctors but has alarmed the Internet industry and enraged gamers.
The legislation includes provisions to limit advertising while a separate bill would take 1 percent of the gaming industry's revenue to create a fund to curb addiction.
The uproar over the legislation highlights conflicting social and economic priorities in technology-soaked South Korea. Internet entrepreneurs are prized as a source of innovation in an economy dominated by gray conglomerates,
but conservative lawmakers and many parents say online obsessions are taking a growing toll on schooling, families and workplaces.

Best part:
Kim Min-sun, a mother of two, said online games take children away from real life.
"Without online games, kids would talk to their mother and play," she said.
:v:
I can see where they're coming from with this ruling.
Online games, and indeed the internet in general, can be pretty damn addictive, and not in the "casual" definition of the word.
Tbh a lot of people take gaming too far and it would be good to see more with regards to addressing gaming addiction worldwide.
Well, if you die whilst playing a game, you need SERIOUS help.
and I mean literally dying.
Or skip out on food/drinks because of playing video games.

Many things are addictive. Some of them, like drugs aren't healthy (Games aren't too if you're playing like 10 hours in a row lol) but a word "addictive" doesn't mean "bad" if someone is addictive to helping, is it bad? "Addictive" doesn't mean "bad".
I am lucky enough to work a job that affords me quite alot of free time, after the project is complete in its entirety, and I can use said free time however I see fit. That being said I have a co worker that dedicates alot of his free time to playing a online game. And lately he seems to be so absorbed in it that he seems to shirk off responsibilities which then fall on me. So I can definitely see why this is a issue.

Addictive pretty much means the repetitive behavior of something besides the presence (or risk) of adverse consequences. It's been used a lot to refer to someone simply enjoying something a lot, but addiction as a medical term (such as how we're using it now) is bad.

Yeah, because the dead aren't beyond saving.
This from a country that believes running a fan in a sealed room will suck the oxygen out and kill you.

hasn't there been some research done that shows online gaming causes very quick bursts of dopamine in rapid succession? meth, cocaine, and nicotine are addictive because of dopamine release.
Everything can be addictive pretty much
I know a guy who got addicted to running, he ran so much his spine collapsed and he hasn't been able to use his legs for over a year. He's making a slow recovery but damn
