They say it is the first time a complex, anatomically-sized bone has been accurately created in this way. It is hoped the technique could be used not only to treat disorders of the specific joint, but more widely to correct problems with other bones too. The Columbia University study appears in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The bone which has been created in the lab is known as the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Lead researcher Dr Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic said: "The availability of personalised bone grafts engineered from the patient's own stem cells would revolutionise the way we currently treat these defects." Dr Vunjak-Novakovic said the new technique could also be applied to other bones in the head and neck, including skull bones and cheek bones, which are similarly difficult to graft. The option to engineer anatomically pieces of human bone in this way could potentially transform the ability to carry out reconstruction work, for instance following serious injury or cancer treatment. She said: "We thought the jawbone would be the most rigorous test of our technique; if you can make this, you can make any shape." She stressed that the joint created in the lab was bone only, and did not include other tissue, such as cartilage. However, the Columbia team is working on a new method for engineering hybrid grafts including bone and cartilage.
Wow, the things science does :buddy:
Science will either save us, or destroy us. This is very, very good though, but this could be used for the wrong reasons too.
Like what?
Making dinosaurs? No, that's pretty awesome too.
Yey, my first News thread is a Success :downs:
Making dinosaurs with 4 jaws?
Science will either save us, or destroy us. This is very, very good though, but this could be used for the wrong reasons too.
You don't know what you're talking about do you?
This is terrible, we have no right to play god!
5th Element, little by little...
Making dinosaurs with 4 jaws?
Still pretty awesome. [editline]01:46PM[/editline]
This is terrible, we have no right to play god!
Welcome to reality.
Retard spotted.
Fixed. :eng101:
Christian spotted.
Hurf durf he must be christian because he mentioned playing god
Evil bisexual immoral atheist pot smoking atheists will doom us all!
Epical, maybe my TMD issues will be fixed sometime!
Could be bad. The more people live, the worse things will get. But that's the inherent problem with solving major problems. The less people die, the older people live, the worse-off the world becomes as a whole. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's great to help people and solve problems, but the more advanced this gets, eventually it could become a problem.
Immortality he we come. [editline]07:55AM[/editline]
Could be bad. The more people live, the worse things will get. But that's the inherent problem with solving major problems. TO THE STARS.
No, actually, it's more likely that we're going to just die here on this rock. Anywhere even remotely habitable is centuries away. An entire civilization of people cooped up together in a big metal box for just one year is guaranteed to result in catastrophe, so obviously being stuck in space for generations just wouldn't happen. Plus they'd all probably die from cosmic radiation or one of the millions of other things out in space that can kill you. And that's just the trip there, we don't even know exactly how far we're going, or even exactly where we're going for that matter, and what difficulties we'll face if we even get there. So, being the type of person who always plays the odds, I say we kill ourselves on this rock, or we die in space shortly after leaving this rock.

Along with the advancements in neurology, one day we can somehow reach out and pull out all the memories of someone's brain, and soon enough, when we are able to recreate one, place them into it. With this technology, we could recreate the first bits of the human body. Soon we can start building veins and muscles, eyes and tongues, soon, we will be able to clone. Soon, we will be able to resurrect, my friends, this is the Cylon age, well, except these aren't machines, not yet anyhow.
Brain based science
...Neurology?
And why are stem cells still controversial? Fuck man, stem cells have the ability to save hundreds of thousands of lives and make millions of lives better.
...Neurology?
That's the word, right there. Fixed. [editline]02:30PM[/editline]
And why are stem cells still controversial? Fuck man, stem cells have the ability to save hundreds of thousands of lives and make millions of lives better.
I don't find anything wrong with stem cell research, it's mostly the "moral" ones, if you know what I mean. "Hurfe you shouldn't play god!!1!!1 Durfe"

"Hurfe you shouldn't play god!!1!!1 Durfe"
The morals game is a load of bullshit because when there is a brain dead victim laying in the hospital bed with no chance of recovery, the hospital is playing god by keeping them alive with machines. However the moment someone wants to pull the plug, the fucking fundimentalists go bat-shit insane and say, "NO, YOU CAN'T KILL THEM LIKE THAT. YOU'RE PLAYING GOD!!!!1111ONEONEOEN" Uhh, no. If anything, it's playing god by keeping them alive on those machines, so shut up and fuck off you crazy assholes! End rant.
Most people against it don't like the fact that stem cells have to be taken from 1 week old embryos, killing them in the process. You can get stem cells from umbilical cords and whatnot, but the embryo is the most practical source. That's what all the controversy is about.
They take them from aborted fetuses. What's wrong with that?

I'm sure they don't force the patient. EDIT: Post above answers.
