The problem is that there has never been any sort of global leaderboard for Wii Sports, so there is no reliable heuristic to determine global Wii Tennis player rankings. The article goes on to explain how the claim is "incorrect" but is likely based on badly-misremembered interpretations of the local Mii skill level used to determine your opponent's skill level.

How can you be "good" at Wii Tennis? Wouldn't a basic shaker yield the same results?

If you read the article, it explains that the only plausible way he could have legitimately determined that he was "second best" in Wii Sports tennis is by beating the hardest AI in the game dozens of times. You need strategy and quick reflexes/thinking to beat the highest AI difficulties, and a random flailer's never going to meet that standard.

being human and trying to win against the AI at the far end of wii sports' difficulty levels is basically like being a midget and trying to beat the Williams sisters on steroids 1v2
