A leak in a gas canister causes fire in a house of Joao district of Sorocaba (São Paulo) on Saturday (23). According to the firefighters, no one was injured.
Photographer Julio Leite, who was at the scene, said the man changed the gas canister and as suspected there was a gas leak, lit a match to determine.
The flames reached the cylinder and spread through the room.
There was no explosion, but the room was severely damaged. "the whole family was in the house. It was a big scare. The kitchen is destroyed" he says.
The neighbors were able to control the fire, according to firefighters. When one of the teams arrived at the scene, only the canister was still burning.
Am I the only one who finds humour in this situation?
Gee, it smells like gas in here. Let me light this match just to make sure.
How dumb ARE you?

Well, it is a very good way to make sure there was any gas around.
I'm just glad nobody got hurt. Could've gone way worse.

No, I find this hilarious but at the same time I feel really bad for his family. Luckily no one got hurt.
At least he only makes it to the honorable mentions category under the Darwin Awards and not a winner of one.
Well, he did find where the leak was, didn't he? :v:
This is gas piping 101 material: You NEVER use a flame to check for gas leaks. EVER. PERIOD.
It's not quite as explosive as pressure-testing a refrigeration system with oxygen (another tremendous no-no), but it's stupid all the same.

more like its in common fucking sense 101
Sounds like something I would do.
Sounds like a college student thing to do

Plus I needed to light my cigarette so you know, multitasking.
Snip, i was late
This guy used the wrong trick at the wrong time. Finding a gas leak with a match is more common than you think but not fucking indoors. Like testing for leaks on a propane tank OUTSIDE of a motorhome or trailer WITH your hand on the valve. Done it many times and even once found a leak and quickly shut off the valve. No harm no foul but when you're indoors the air to fuel ratio can lead to a giant explosion.
Oh jeez, and sometimes I get matches that don't even work.
Wouldn't this be the same as pointing a gun at your face and pulling the trigger to check if it's loaded?

We were always taught to use soapy water. That way you don't set fire to a thing that isn't designed to be lit on fire.

As long as you have no oxidizer in the line there isn't any real danger aside from the spray of fire that shoots out. If I'm almost certain I know where a leak is I'll put an open flame up to it to see if it grows or chases the gas, if I get a positive I'll just put out the flame using my thumb and then purge the line before brazing it.
I mean this is all assuming we're talking about a small propane line or something, if it's some big thing or if it's got some highly flammable shit like LH or LOX then no, that sort of cowboy shit is not okay.

Little late, but you realize it's not the gas line that explodes, but all the gas that has already leaked out into/mixed with the surrounding air, right? Propane is especially dangerous in this regard because it's heavier than air and tends to "pool".

Sensationalist Headlines is known for two things. People making horrible jokes, and fighting.
For some reason, Mod's stop being OK with people making jokes in SH and made them banable.
I mean he found it didn't he
That looks close to "Look inside the barrel of a gun to check if it's loaded" in the level of retardedness.
