British Prime Minister David Cameron hopes to have access to all means of electronic communication by anyone in the country and ban the use of encrypted apps such as Facebook Messenger, Snapchat and iMessage unless they agree to provide backdoors.
It’s called the Investigatory Powers Bill (and more accurately nicknamed the “Snooper’s Charter”). According to records the bill also requires ISPs to keep records online browsing, social media activity, email and voice messages and SMS texts for one year. Cameron stated in January:
“In our country, do we want to allow a means of communication between people which even in extremes, with a signed warrant from the Home Secretary personally, that we cannot read? My answer to that question is no we must not. If I am prime minister, I will make sure it is a comprehensive piece of legislation that makes sure we do not allow terrorists safe spaces to communicate with each other.”
Many social media networks use end-to-end encryption to protect user privacy, which is a fancy way of saying a message is readable only by the sender and the recipient — no one in between, including the government.
Terrorists have homes, right? Why not ban locks then? Or doors? GREAT IDEA.
This government is just awful. Using anything to push their perverse agenda.
I'm finding less and less reasons to stay here. This government is a joke.
It's not often I actually feel animosity towards the average person over here, but if I could slap everybody who voted for these cunts one after another then I would happily do so.
The average voter is bloody stupid.

The problem is the system, the overwhelming majority of the population didn't want a conservative government.
It's a stupid idea, and it's incredibly unlikely to pass.
Keep it coming Cameron you prick.
You really genuinely have no idea, do you.
Whatsapp even is encrypted now so.. that would just be silly. (I believe it's even better encrypted than telegram at the moment)
This has to pass through first, right?
good luck, I'm behind seven proxies
Apple won't be providing back doors for mass surveillance. This ain't gonna happen.
Which sane terrorist would even use WhatsApp, Facebook or Snapchat for planning his evil deeds anyway? There is plenty of open and free alternatives for cryptography and the only effective way of stopping those is to totally ban access to the internet. This is as pointless as it can get.

Al-Qaeda used Skype until the Snowden docs leaked that the US and UK were listening in. Plenty of terrorists use off-the-shelf products to communicate.

But they literally already do.

If there is a criminal search warrant they are obliged to, like any other legitimate provider.
This is a different scenario entirely.

Oxymoron.
This is the most ridiculous thin I've read all week.

Thank god for that I feel much safer now thanks Cameron and May
Keep up the good work
Why on earth would terrorists use a public IM service?
Because it's available, effective, and doesn't send up any red flags. Like I said, this is not a hypothetical, as weird as it might seem it is well-documented that even terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda use commercial services to communicate.
Not that I'm defending this legislation, but it's pretty well-known at this point that terrorists don't use particularly sophisticated tools, and that's why ordinary people keep getting caught up in dragnet-style collection. If terrorist communications were different and distinguishable then we wouldn't be in this mess in the first place.
ISIS is causing UK citicens more damage by simply existing than by anything they have physically done so far.
This is a scary thing they are proposing.

I don't think you see the real issue. They are ABLE to do this if they are obliged to. That doesn't set off any red flags for you? It means that they can do whatever they want regardless.
Users should be in control of their software, not the other way around.
So are they going to try banning open-source applications and services now? I find it hard to believe that would even be possible.
And suddenly everyone tech savvy leaves UK and it is left to rot with no smart people to manage infrastructure.

Implying we do now.
If this is the way we're going, I'll probably consider moving to Canada.
Would be funny if the impacted companies would take their money and go somewhere else and stop offering the impacted services to people living in the UK.
Also encrypted communication is omni important for any company (Sometimes even legally required). Take that away or force it to be insecure and you're bound to have a massive disaster on your hands. Companies, especially big ones won't give that up.
Can't see this ban really happening, but I got my popcorn ready in case it does happen and the UK getting screwed.
Don't worry, I'm sure there'd be an exemption for digital banking. After all, they're pretty much already excluded from all the other laws, so this won't make much difference.

The UK Gov wouldn't dare touching E-Banking, even with a 10 foot pole. With E-Banking there's so much liability and responsibility involved.
But what about Company communications? What if it uses a self-hosted solution? What if it's using a 3rd Party service with End-End Communications between Employees?
Services like Microsoft Lync, Slack, Hipchat, and any other Chat/Communication service that is used by companies out there.
There goes a lot of trade secrets trough those channels, and these must not be compromised at any cost.
Who is responsible when secret company informations getting leaked by Backdoored secure channels? The Provider? The Government?
This is a legal minefield with a severe long-term impact.
I'm moving out west to start an Islamic death cult. We're going to post videos of breathing exercises. We'll all laugh as Britons choke to death from the breathing ban.
Jesus christ what the actual fuck is wrong with our government, I wish it was easier to fucking leave this place, this country is becoming a joke.
