Sexual selection and individual or group recognition have been identified as major forces in its evolution. While important in the development of vocal displays, vocal learning also allows signal copying in social interactions. Such copying can function in addressing or labelling selected conspecifics. Most examples of addressing in non-humans come from bird song, where matching occurs in an aggressive context. However, in other animals, addressing with learned signals is very much an affiliative signal. We studied the function of vocal copying in a mammal that shows vocal learning as well as complex cognitive and social behaviour, the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). Copying occurred almost exclusively between close associates such as mother–calf pairs and male alliances during separation and was not followed by aggression. All copies were clearly recognizable as such because copiers consistently modified some acoustic parameters of a signal when copying it. We found no evidence for the use of copying in aggression or deception. This use of vocal copying is similar to its use in human language, where the maintenance of social bonds appears to be

SOURCE: http://rspb.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/280/1757/20130053.full

I thought this was a long hypothesized theory.
I wonder what my name sounds like in Dolphinese
hey eek wanna go hang out with ehehehhe sure eekekeh I'd love to
Dolphins are amazing. After reading a bunch, I would definitely put them in 2nd place in intelligence behind us... but there are many types of intelligence. It's also interesting to note that it's probable they they evolved a bit on land, then decided to go back into the sea (like whales, ect) I wish I had a buddy Dolphin, Elephant, Crow, and Chimp to hang out with. We could be like nature's High-IQ club or something. But I'm scared of chimps ever since that one ripped that lady's face off.
i think we all know what happens next..
I remember learning about this years ago, though.

This further proves that dolphins are very likely classifiable as non-human persons. Sure they're technically pre-Stone Age in terms of technology, but what do you expect from a species that has no arms or hands and, since they live in water, has no opportunity to discover and invent fire, thus rendering most energy techs and metallurgies out of their reach? (there are volcanic vents, yes, but without hands and protective gloves, how could a dolphin reliably smelt iron and forge a sword?) Still, they seem to make decent hunter-gatherers, and they have good freedom-of-movement in the water, which gives them a leg-up over the average human unaided by technology.
Those dolphins need to be put in their place.
Allan, Allan, Allan! No mate he's called Steve. Steve! Steve!

I'm sure we can train some dolphin police to take care of those dolphin murderers and dolphin rapists. From there it's all a matter of setting up dolphin embassies and appointing dolphin ambassadors to speak on behalf of the dolphin people of the proud dolphin nation of Dolphin.
I would love to just take a willing dolphin one day, find out a way to translate them so we can communicate and then plonk some bionic arms and legs on that guy to see what kind of things he would be capable of with hands and shit.

I too was concerned where that was headed.

male dolphins can grab stuff with their dicks I don't think they need hands to make tools.
