Fast food workers in 50 cities across the U.S. are walking off the job Thursday as they protest for higher wages. Organizers say it will be the largest strike to hit the $200 billion fast-food industry. Workers from fast food giants McDonald's, Burger King Wendy's and Yum Brands-owned KFC are calling on their employers to pay them a minimum of $15 an hour and allow them to form unions without retaliation.
Most of those workers make atleast $9/hour, which is alot better than the $7.25/hr alot of other fast food workers get, now they want $15/hr to flip burgers, thats illogical. Also pointless seeing that mcdonalds can easily replace them. Just because you stayed working at mcdonalds till you was 35 doesnt make you any more special than a 17 year old in mcdonalds eyes atleast. [editline]29th August 2013[/editline] Im late, lock this please. Sorry.
$15/hr isn't illogical, but it is impracticable, yet also a great starting point for negotiations for a higher wage which is justifiable because even $10/hr is hardly enough to support yourself without draining social programs.
They just say $15/hr so they can negotiate it down. But they should be making $10/hr at the most no more than that.
I read this as "Wave of fast food strikes 50 cities." It was quite the interesting image.
now they want $15/hr to flip burgers, thats illogical.
No. No it isn't. It's very logical to demand that. Of course they're not gonna get it, but they start high so there's plenty of room to work down without rendering the entire protest a waste of time. You can't argue that A: 7.25/hr is too low to live on and B: that working fast food is utter hell. They do deserve a large bump in money and a lot of people who know a thing or three are saying that it would boost the economy tremendously if they were raised up to 10-12 an hour.
I just feel sorry for my mother in all this, she's a Nurse who works in the NICU. She has her masters and regularly teaches in the spring, yet she hasn't had any significant raises in awhile.
I don't see why the USA doesn't try to match Canada's minimum wage, that living wage thing DC had is also a great idea, having a separate, higher, minimum wage for companies with a greater then however many millions it was per year.

When i was working at mcdonalds last year i was lucky to make $8/hr
I think that wages should lift people above the poverty line, but I also think other places should follow suit as well.
good luck to them!!
I don't get this. There is nothing like "right to work". If workers strike, they must face the consequence if they are fired. The problem with fast food workers is the turnover rate is SO large, that all the people striking can, and will at some point, be fired or leave for other work.
They just say $15/hr so they can negotiate it down.
It also leads to people not taking them seriously. Thats not good for strikers.
doesnt mean they dont deserve a living wage [editline]29th August 2013[/editline] this is how striking works
No, workers deserve the wage they take.
$8 and thats it. You want a high paying job? Get a certificate or a degree. Make something of yourself. People who now make $15 an hour have probably worked hard to get where there at and have to do hard work everyday. While these clowns who work at fast food want the same pay because of what? The "hard" work they do? Try working at Sony during this 95 degree weather with no fans in a factory with only $9 an hour for 12 hours straight. This is all bullshit.
get a certificate or a degree then and make something of yerself instead of working a shitty factory job then
get a certificate or a degree then and make something of yerself instead of working a shitty factory job then
I am. Its called working to pay off your college.
okay and dont you think theres others in the same situation working at these shitty fast food jobs? or do they not deserve better pay because their job is somehow less valuable than yers?
My girlfriend makes the equivalent of $5.70 an hour for a very similar job, it's ridiculous that they're asking for more than they get to be honest.
okay and dont you think theres others in the same situation working at these shitty fast food jobs? or do they not deserve better pay because their job is somehow less valuable than yers?
I do think 7 is to low for these jobs but they dont deserve that much of a higher pay when they dont have that hard of a job.
I do think 7 is to low for these jobs but they dont deserve that much of a higher pay when they dont have that hard of a job.
AHHAHAHAHAHAHA I'm assuming you've never worked fast food, have you boy?
Best of luck to them, I hate knowing that there's people who have to work 70+ hours a week to keep their family alive. [editline]29th August 2013[/editline]
$8 and thats it.
get a certificate or a degree then and make something of yerself instead of working a shitty factory job then
Best magic some jobs up!
I do think 7 is to low for these jobs but they dont deserve that much of a higher pay when they dont have that hard of a job.
fast food is incredibly fast paced and high stress. i wouldnt call it easy or nice or enjoyable at all
AHHAHAHAHAHAHA I'm assuming you've never worked fast food, have you boy?
Really? Yes i have worked at fast food before. If you call that hard work then you have no idea what hard work really is.
All this self-righteous "oh you should be thankful for the money you get!" bullshit makes me want to puke.
Why should they make 15/h for menial labor? I starting working at age 14 at McDonalds. My wage was 5.90/h. I have been busting my ass since then to get to where I am today. I spent a lot of time bettering myself to get to my current job. If a McDonalds worker get paid 15/h, then my job I should be making 30/h.
Inflation is of course the problem hitting wages, however higher minimum wages will INCREASE inflation.
Nice to know less than level entry positions in food could soon make as much if not more as entry level Emergency Center accounting. Welp, time to quit my job and look for something in fast food :y
