http://www.news.com.au/technology/internet-filter/telstra-optus-to-begin-censoring-web-next-month/story-fn5j66db-1226079954138 Prepare for the shit-storm if/when this happens.
Telstra and Optus confirmed they would block access to a list of child abuse websites provided by the Australian Communications and Media Authority and more compiled by unnamed international organisations from mid-year.
I can understand blocking websites like these but it's not gonna do much to stop the spread of such stuff.
They are voluntarily doing it based on a list of child abuse websites, most ISPs in other countries do this already. The lack of transparency is worrying though, I wish they would publish the list of sites blocked.
I'm kind of hoping for a shitstorm because then people would take notice rather than it just passing by without a second glance. Also only blocking 500 websites, doesn't seem like the amount listed in that Wikileaks one. Probably a scaled down version with a lot of the big ones removed.
It's meant to be mainly the illegal sites, so hopefully it won't become a huge problem. I'm very worried they'll take this over the top, I wish they'd tell us which sites were being censored.
The list the ACMA uses (that was leaked a while back) had a shitload of non child-abuse websites listed. For example, redtube. This isn't gonna be surgical, they'll just block anything that a soccer mom could be offended by. Just watch

I'm absolutely okay with censoring illegal websites, but when they take it this far, it's upsetting. Don't take my porn away from me. :saddowns:
This article says 500 so it sounds like they revised their criteria from that previous list.
Either way im fuckin' stocking up on porn right now.
Theres too many porn sites for them to block!
Theres too many porn sites for them to block!
That's true, but if they take my favourites... They shall feel my wrath.
Theres too many porn sites for them to block!
Don't need to hit them all. Just the good ones, and enough to demotivate people from searching. How many times could you look at an error page saying "LOL WE FILTER U :australia:" until you just give up
It all starts innocently to protect our children. Soon enough it will spread to blocking any shit they deem unworthy.
How many times could you look at an error page saying "LOL WE FILTER U :australia:" until you just give up
an infinite amount
The problem is the original list (this one seems to be edited if it's only 500 sites) was going to block sites with user submitted content because, once in a blue moon, some wanker would post something illegal. The problem is Australia seems to be huge on the idea of "punish everyone for one or two idiots' mistakes." Take the driving laws here. A small percentage of new drivers over here are intentional douche bags on the road and drag race each other down small streets in the middle of the night. The government's solution? Ban having more than one passenger in the car for people on their red P plates (unless they're family members). Did it work? Fuck no. I can hear cars dragging down the main road every damn night. And the price? People who aren't absolute fucking morons end up missing out on doing stuff for an entire year like going away on road trips with mates, etc (and given that a lot of people get their red P plates in the last year of high school or just after high school has finished it's kind of the time in your life when you want to do things like that). Didn't mean to drag it off topic, just wanted to make a point. The government here seems to have some warped views on... well, most things.
Insert joke about how Australia censor everything here.
Apparently you can't say a simple opinion.
Australia is such a joke of a country.
Says America. :v:
Shut up they both suck.
Says America. :v:
America is bad too, but it's not laws that ruin it.
They are going to add more websites to the list, this may cause other ISP's to agree to a filter, if so we are fucked.
Maybe if parents didn't want their children to see certain material, said parents could somewhat supervise their children's online activity.
America is bad too, but it's not laws that ruin it.
What about gun laws?
Maybe if parents didn't want their children to see certain material, said parents could somewhat supervise their children's online activity.
But that would mean they would have to start actually being parents! :aaaaa:
Don't you fucking dare fuck me over, Internode.
I hope iinet doesn't give in to this shit.
whats the chances they block chan, just wondering
This won't do a thing. Most CP websites use TOR now, which can't be blocked.
Welcome to Australia, I can see it's only a matter of time before this goes out of hand. This country has so many rules for everything it really is depressing sometimes.
Don't you fucking dare fuck me over, Internode.
Switching to Internode once my contract ends
