3D artist messes up facial expressions, becomes piece of art
Humans use facial expressions to either show or hide emotions, but artist Mike Pelletier has created a 3D animation titled "Parametric Expression" that personifies those emotions behind the expression — to a haunting and chilling effect.
Words can't really do the animation justice
I guess all those shitty sfm movies on youtube with overly exagerated faceposer sliders are now art
Looks rather stupid, but then again, the angry expression is quite interesting.
ive been messing up faces in gmod since i was 12 wheres my recognition
caught me off guard ;_;
This is just retarded.
They look kind of demonic about a quarter of the way through the animation, don't they?

you could at least post like salvador dali you shrew
Trying to start a discussion on what passes as art (at least here in this subforum) should be bannable. You're opening a can of worms.
As for the art itself.. Well, it seems quite cheap, in a way. There's nothing new here other than the fact that it is passed off as art.

This is my new favorite insult.

Art is whatever the creator deems art, which is different from the more conservative definition of art, fine art.
Is this art then?

I really like the display of this mixture between incomphensible anger and the lack of giving a proper simple expression. It really shows the inner conflict of this very scout.
that personifies those emotions behind the expression
I kinda get the second one, how the faces distort out of an angry expression to show demonic creatures, but I don't really know how to interpret that dopy smile that looks like scewed up faceposing.
Lord....
Good news for all those broken face poses though.
I think the use of the word "chilling" is dramatic and inaccurate.

The faces need more disfiguring contortions.
-edit
Because.. tha inner pain.. tha anguish
All the conflicting things that are part of being an abomination manifest as bad animation.
Stupid dipshit, doesn't know how to use smoothing groups.

No man, those unsmoothed edges are part of the artistic value

Yes. This is one of my favorite pieces.
The Scout ( or The Cry as it is also known) by e_k_M has been the subject of much analysis since it was first displayed. As an artefact of ‘high’ culture it is seen as great work of art, while as a cultural product it has been widely referenced and reproduced.
For humans, sight is our most important sense, far more developed than any other. We tend to privilege sight above other senses, which gives rise to the study of visual culture. Berger (1972) says, “Seeing comes before words…the child looks and recognises before it can speak.”
However, Welsch (2000) makes an interesting point about The Scout which diminishes the impact of this idea.
“Take e_k_M 's pose The Scout as example. You haven't actually perceived it until you've seen a Scout - an incessant Scout which makes you tremble. Visual perception, in this case, must proceed through to an acoustic one.” (Welsch, 2000)
Baldwin et. al. (1999: 395, 366) explain that “Seeing is always cultured seeing…What we see is always conditioned by what we know.” In this case, Welsch’s argument can be explained as such: to understand The Scout we must first have heard the sound of an anguished Scout. This essay aims to explain how culture effects how an image in seen.
The Scout was posed using Garry's Mod. It depicts, at face value, one central figure who has his face meshed up. The scenery is a city in perspective pointing towards the viewer, giving it a sense of motion.
The Scout is thought of as the first expressionist pose. The Web Museum (2002) defines expressionism as a “movement in fine arts that emphasized the expression of inner experience rather than solely realistic portrayal, seeking to depict not objective reality but the subjective emotions and responses that objects and events arouse in the artist.” e_k_M's pose does not show a realistic visual interpretation of reality; it is an abstract image, based on his inner feelings, and attempts to convey his most intimate and terrifying feelings and emotions.
e_k_M ’s portrayal of raw human emotion through art has led to him being labelled an existentialist. This would seem to correlate with Jean-Paul Sartre’s beliefs on existentialism:“
The existentialist frankly states that man is in anguish. His meaning is as follows When a man commits himself to anything, fully realising that he is not only choosing what he will be, but is thereby at the same time a legislator deciding for the whole of mankind - in such a moment a man cannot escape from the sense of complete and profound responsibility. There are many, indeed, who show no such anxiety. But we affirm that they are merely disguising their anguish or are in flight from it.” (Sartre, 1946)

That's pretty cool looking.
A lot of people need to hop of their high chair when they say something isn't art, what makes you think anyone cares? You're not any authority on the definition of art, and never will be. Art is in the eyes of the beholder.

you're art, dude.
it looks pretty damn cool I'll give it that and I stared at it for a good minute
also before anyone says 'this isn't art' - art is something with a definition that it is not up to you to decide, just because you think something is shit doesn't mean it isn't art
