Is it worth getting a small ssd for my boot drive? I keep seeing the shell shocker deals with them for pretty cheap. Would it be worth an upgrade from a 7200rpm drive?
Personally I don't think they're worth the money at the moment. So long as you regularly re-install windows your computer should boot and be usable in under a minute
wait till they mature, get em when they get cheaper
Yes - it's a significant improvement to Windows and slow-loading applications like Steam and Firefox (with a heavy profile).
A few seconds isn't worth almost £100
It is really not worth it at all, £60+ for a few seconds quicker loading/boot time.
I personally find it worth the price, I bought the Vertex 2 60GB a while back and installed Windows 7 on it, the install speed is insane when installing from an USB stick (11 min till desktop) and the boot times also decreased alot. The biggest argument people use is that Windows boots faster, but that is not the only thing, if you start up programs (For example Office) from the SSD you'll notice a big difference in loading times compared to a mechanical drive, it is quite noticeable when you boot the same program alot from the SSD. To the question "Is it worth it" : Yes, for me it is, but it is mainly a personal preference, if you have the money and all your components are up to date or you just like the speed increase go for it.
Anyone who has one is going to say they are definitely worth it (like me) and anyone who doesn't have one will say they aren't worth it. All I can say is this; I've had a OCZ Vertex 30GB SSD installed in my system for about 9 months now, and I have become so accustomed to the difference in overall system responsiveness and speed that when I go to use a computer that doesn't have a SSD I forget, and assume that there is something wrong with it.
If you don't mind the boot time etc on your PC now there is no point. My PC loads up pretty fast, and that's without one. It's just not needed for me.
It's not about boot speed it's about hardware speed. And yes it's definitely worth it.
I realise that, it does boot speed too. It's pointless if you're fine with the current speed though.
I've been thinking about an SSD but don't flash memory drives die rather quickly compared to hard drives?
A few seconds isn't worth almost £100
Being able to cold boot all the time without relying on hibernation for even moderately fast boots, along with a huge improvement in overall system responsiveness is worth £100 imo Boot speed isn't the only factor - the perceived system speed is like going from 1GB of RAM to 4.
I believe SSD's have a low lifetime if much applications are installed on it. Correct me if I am wrong.

SSDs are still young technology and since they haven't been tested long term they could encounter (even more) faults as they get older. Personally I wouldn't jump onto the wagon until they are a reasonable price. Your money would be better spent on other hardware
No, if anything SSDs live longer.
Not at all, they have been known to lose the data on them. I'm not saying 100% do, but they are not as reliable.
