(Reuters) - The billionaire co-founder of Carlyle Group private equity company is donating $7.5 million to restore the Washington Monument, which has been closed since it was damaged by an earthquake in August.
David Rubenstein, a former policy adviser toPresident Jimmy Carter, plugged the project's funding gap, matching Congress, which has allocated $7.5 million to repair the monument, the Trust for the National Mall said in a statement on Thursday.
Rubenstein, who is chairman of theJohn F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and a regent of the Smithsonian Institute, decided to help repair the monument after it was damaged by a rare 5.8 magnitude earthquake on August 23. It has been closed to the public since.
The monument, a 555-foot obelisk built in 1884 to commemorate the first U.S. president,George Washington, was left with several cracked and chipped stones. The damage includes six large cracks through its marble exterior, making its structure "extremely vulnerable," officials said.
Good karma, this man will live a good life.
It is good to see someone give when they really don't need to.

Believe me, I don't think a billionaire spends because he needs to.
Even if this might be for pr reasons, it's a good thing. Taxpayers dont need to pay it.
Really happy it's going to get all the repairs it needs now.
If I had a billion dollars I'd do similar things too
I mean, what the fuck else am I going to do with that money?
oh yeah hookers and blow heuehueheu
Why are they only just starting to repair it, or well getting around to it. The Washington Monument isn't just some little statue. . . Its kinda larger than that.

As fun and cool as it is to hate the rich you should keep it out of threads about charitable donations.
What a lovely gesture, shame it's for a monument though and not something a bit more important.

Hey at least he's doing it for something good unlike other insanely rich people. And if he's this charitable with regards to a monument, I'm sure he's probably donated money to charities.
What a lovely gesture, shame it's for a monument though and not something a bit more important.
It's preserving history, which is very important.
Not being from america and not hearing much of Washington much anywhere, I can't help but think of Fallout 3 whenever an important monument/building in Washington comes up in a news story.
I drive by the Washington monument quite frequently, and it hurts my heart to see it closed for so long. I'm really happy that someone finally chose to do something about it.

Clearly it's because Congress is working so hard to fix America first, then when it is done in a couple of months, it'll get to the Washington Monument.

Oh yeah that's how they great rich right? Frivolously wasting money? Maybe he felt he needed to because he believes it needs to be restored?

Oh I totally agree, don't get me wrong.

It's okay man, I think you're right
and then in the middle of repairing, they accidentally tip it over.
it's a nice monument and all but I think there are much better things to donate that money to.
Well, a standing monument attracts more tourists than a broken one :L
Still I agree that the DwarfOverlord Trust Fund could be a better place to put 7.5 million dollars...
it's a nice monument and all but I think there are much better things to donate that money to.
His name should be written on the monument.
I like historical buildings and this is really a better way to spend your money on than plastic surgery. Though, I'd want that money to go against SOPA. If that would be possible.

Who cares? At least something will actually change here unlike most charities that get money thrown at them and nothing happens.
I'd rather the money go directly to my bank account than some phallic eyesore.

Why would he give you 7,5 million dollars?
Also, you have a really dirty mind if you think the Washington monument is phallic.

As long as you know what you're doing it is a lot of fun :V
