A federal district judge struck down Indiana's ban on same-sex marriage Wednesday, saying the law violates the equal protection clause of the Constitution.Judge Richard Young did not issue a stay on his ruling, so couples were able to marry immediately.
"These couples, when gender and sexual orientation are taken away, are in all respects like the family down the street," he wrote. "The Constitution demands that we treat them as such."
Marion County Clerk Beth White in the state's capital city began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in her office downtown, and dozens of gay couples lined up.
"Chief Judge Richard Young's decision on marriage equality sets forth a clear course of action for this office to follow regarding same-sex marriage licenses," White said in a news release. "It is my responsibility to uphold court rulings that impact this office and that is what I will do."

For the non-US among us (and people like me who could be called sheltered), what do the different colours mean with respect to political alignment and what are the differences in policies?

In red are states that have better barbecues than blue states.

Red states are conservative/reactionary and blue states are liberal/radical
purple states are (i'm assuming) ones that show no particular trend.
Wisconsin doesn't have same sex marriage yet?
Huh, I thought we did.

purple = only states that matter in federal elections aka swing states

more like red states are conservative/reactionary and blue states are conservative/less reactionary
As a Hoosier this is a good surprise.
add ohio to that list, it'll be happening any time now, they don't have that many more obstacles to get past
more like red states are conservative/reactionary and blue states are conservative/less reactionary
TO CLEAR THIS UP FOR EVERYONE: RED = REPUBLICAN, BLUE = DEMOCRAT, PURPLE = SWING STATE (EITHER)
You can be a conservative democrat just as you can be a liberal republican

you'd think the state would have respect for people like that considering harvey milk was from wisconsin (i assume???)

Milk was from New York
people from my town are getting super butthurt. it's great.
Fuck yeah, finally my state does something right/
I'm literally overjoyed, I would have never expected this from my state! Yes!
Wisconsin may soon be joining this list. The last time I heard, judges in our state supreme court are voting on striking down a law banning gay marriage. Not a surprise to me because one of our State Senators who's a woman is homosexual and the Representative for the district I live in is also gay.
Oh god, they're attacking from both sides! get the fuck out while you still can!
/rate dumb over sarcasm, nice
I just move to Indiana, I'm glad to see they're not quite as backwards as I thought. :v:
It's only a matter of time before it spreads into the core of the country.
So who's taking bets on who's gonna be last?
my money's on Utah
Soon the fronts will unite in Texas where they will plant a big, gay flag up on the highest building in Houston.
Uhhh... Ehhh...
Fuck, I can't make a joke on this one. Indiana is one of those states that us Europeans entirely ignore and know nothing about. My quest to make stupid comments in every gay-marriage-legal thread has failed.
If i got into office i would approve the Russia method

Only 9 out of 50 states allow a human a basic human right?

You're inhuman.
Only 9 out of 50 states allow a human a basic human right?
I dislike the phrase "basic human right"
Only 9 out of 50 states allow a human a basic human right?
"Basic human right" implies you need it to continue living.
As a homo gay man that enjoys a good dicking I can safely say I won't drop dead if I go a few days without drinking some blokes cum.

The phrase "human right" is never used by anyone without it being amplified by the prefix "basic"

You'd take shirtless photos of yourself riding horses?
That's the spirit
