Sure, 30% of them MAY be open world, but what percentage of those are actually any good?

I love open world games but there is a lot you can fuck up
simply not having enough various things to do is a big one
"open world" doesn't mean "good" and can often mean the exact opposite of the studio doesn't know how to handle it.
Wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle.
Describes way too many games of this type.

Too true, though on the flipside one could end up risking having too much to do and barely any of it is any good.
Not to mention that while the worlds are huge sometimes they don't end up being too memorable (Xenoblade managed to dodge that bullet with their world design, though), which is why I prefer moderately sized levels like the Spencer Mansion and whatnot.
Dark souls 1 had the best level design I've seen in a game, and dead island and dark souls 2 had the best combat. I'd say Dead rising would be fair to add to the list of most interesting concept.
Shadow of Mordor was one of the most refined games I've played, but it's biggest downfall was that the combat was the main catch and didn't stay too interesting for too long.
TES, Stalker, Fallout series are brilliant examples of amazing open world games too... Same with GTA and Saints Row, Borderlands, fable, prototype, far cry, just cause. Absolutely great games.
there are tons of open world games to baseline off of that are great... and then there is basketcase that is mmo's and the bad parts of the AC series.

Exactly; I hate the popularity of open world games since so many of them have lackluster worlds. When done right though, they are amazing.
So in other words, 30% of the games sold are GTA V
