The launch comes just days after rival LG said it would begin production of curved-screen phones next year. Digital display technology has been progressing towards curved screens. Both Samsung and LG already offer curved organic light-emitting diode (OLED) television sets. Samsung said the curved screen display would help consumers use some of the features on the phone, including those that enable users to check information such as date, time and missed calls when home screen is off, with more ease. At the same time, users can also change music tracks on their phone, even while its display is off. The Galaxy Round will initially be launched only in South Korea. The firm gave no indication of its plans for a global launch.
Can anybody point out to me exactly why this is a big deal? I completely fail to see the point. Not saying there isn't a point, but clearly it just isn't apparent to me. Sure it's progress but hardly worth making a new phone out of it, I just can't see any use for this until it either wraps around my wrist or folds up. Also surely it would have made slightly more sense to curve it on the long edge instead?
Neat! Hopefully mainstream phones will be foldable in a few years..
I don't understand how a curved screen helps to do things while it's off.
Screen won't break as easy if you drop it since it won't be as likely to contact anything, will fit against your leg in your pocket better, easier to reach the far edge with your thumb, might feel nicer in your hands
If anything it's just something new and different.
Feels a bit gimmicky but I hope it does decently enough to develop the tech further.
This isn't anything new. One of the former iPhones was supposed to have a convex/concave screen (one of the two), but the idea was abandoned after a few prototypes because manufacturing the glass for the screen was said to be too complicated.

Just means the idea has been around, kinda new.

5.7 inches? Phones are too big now, keep it at 4-4.5
5.7 inches? Phones are too big now, keep it at 4-4.5
People said the Dell Streak was laughably big when it was released, but now 5" is the new standard screen size.
Posted this elsewhere but have it here too: Seems handy as hell for when you're half asleep.
It's a step forward in phone ergonomics, that's for sure.
finally big phones will actually fit comfortably in your pocket
a curved screen. Curved... Screen
People said the Dell Streak was laughably big when it was released, but now 5" is the new standard screen size.
Which is ridiculous really; these things are closer to tablets now more than they are a reasonable phone size (imo).
Which is ridiculous really; these things are closer to tablets now more than they are a reasonable phone size (imo).
I like phablets. I don't like the hassle of owning both a phone and a tablet ; and phablets have gotten to the point where they're the best of both worlds.

I've found that I'm in the minority on that one, but I also don't use my phone for much more than talking, texting, and the occasional google search. Methinks I'm not the primary audience :v:
I wonder if it sits nicely in your pocket since its curved.
How long until they make the phone that bends.
might feel nicer in your hands
will definitely feel nicer
Would this be good for the Oculus Rift?
Would this be good for the Oculus Rift?
what
People said the Dell Streak was laughably big when it was released, but now 5" is the new standard screen size.
It didn't help that the Streak was ugly as fuck. [editline]9th October 2013[/editline]
what
It was a simple question. Could curved displays improve VR headsets in any way? (I'd doubt it).
a curved screen. Curved... Screen
Now with curved sword.
what
a Curved a screen?
Would this be good for the Oculus Rift?
I believe OLEDs were already discussed in the Oculus Rift thread, they believed that it would be too costly.
a Curved a screen?
Not particularly. The Rift uses lenses for optics anyway. A combination of that and camera effects via the software will result in correct proportions and the like.
Hm, i find Galaxy Curve to sound better then Galaxy Round.
