One of the World’s Seven Ancient World Wonders is about to be reincarnated as Egypt’s supreme antiquities council has approved the rebuilding of the Lighthouse of Alexandria.
The Lighthouse, which was built by the Ptolemaic Kingdom in 280 BC, once stood at approximately 137 meters tall and was one of the world’s tallest man-made structures for hundreds of years.
Hundreds of years after being badly damaged by a number of earthquakes in 1323, Egypt is seeking to revive the lighthouse at it’s original location.
We don't even know if they were real or not.
We don't even know if they were real or not.
We can make it real!
How are they paying for this? Sounds like a very costly project.

I remember watching a documentary that pointed out that you'd need to have had a elaborate aqueduct system to supply all these gardens that didn't exist at that point in time, sixth century BC. Herodotus made no mention of it during his histories.
That looks like it could function as a prison island. Like the Alcatraz of the East.
That's neat. I hope more ancient buildings gets re-buildt. Would be cool if a pyramid got reworked to look like it did thousands of years ago, with smooth marble slopes and a golden tip.
This is like my favorite wonder to build in Civ V.

Think how much money they make off tourism for the pyramids, now imagine if they get another wonder of the ancient world.
colossus of rhodes please.

The pyramids, or the hanging gardens are definately a million percent better to build.
What we need next is the Great Library of Alexandria.

Nah, Polynesia + Great Lighthouse = Good stuff.

I'm not planning on visiting a country with so much civil strife to see something that isn't even the original.
Ever since the Arab Spring, the tourist industry in the Middle East has been kind of shot to hell.

Literally, not even figuratively.
IIRC, some western tourist were trapped there for about two years during the Arab Spring.
colossus of rhodes please.
I can see the Greek government spending all their hard-dealt-with-the-IMF money on this. Remember the submarine scandal a few years ago?

So where all those towers in Dubai, but the prestige and money from tourism is great.

Tower of Babel remake when?
Tower of Babel remake when?
Imagine you're on a flight and you could see it right outside your plane window
Rebuild every ruin there is for extra dickwaving
So where all those towers in Dubai, but the prestige and money from tourism is great.
That's from oil money in a very stable country. Not from one that relied on tourism while now being a military dictatorship.
Not to mention, those were built using modern materials which are cheaper and more efficient. Unless they're going to fake the lighthouse, they're gonna need a lot of stone carved the right way.
Tower of Babel remake when?
They tried, but there were communication issues in the planning stages.
What we need next is the Great Library of Alexandria.
Really we need to build our own modern version so we can actually keep a record of all our shit.

The morning after the naval attack on Libya, I remember the news reporting that the SAS and RAF evacuated all the British oil workers in Hercules right out of the desert. I guess they knew there was a threat.

I dunno, the internet already does a pretty good job preserving the amounts of cat memes, rule 34 fan fics, and fetish discussion boards that are churned out daily.

Dubai is not, never was, and will never be built on oil money. Their economy relies largely on trade and finance. Oil accounts for just 5% of its GDP.
