Sheriff’s deputies in Alabama confiscated more than 100 cases of beer and numerous bottles of liquor Monday from a group of LSU students on their way to Gulf Shores for spring break, according to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office. During the stop, the pickup’s driver gave deputies consent to search the trailer, where authorities found nearly 2,000 beers, five liters of boxed wine and eight bottles of liquor, Myles said. The students, who identified themselves to deputies as fraternity members, were en route to the beach to meet “a larger group of people for the week of spring break,” Myles said. The four men joined the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at LSU in the fall. The men were issued minor in possession of alcohol summonses. None were drinking when they were pulled over, and all the men cooperated fully with deputies, Myles said. Among the confiscated alcoholic beverages were 106 18-packs of Natural Light beer, five 12-packs of Corona beer and five liters of Franzia boxed wine. Several bottles of tequila, vodka, whiskey and rum also were collected by deputies.
http://theadvocate.com/news/neworleans/neworleansnews/12042607-123/underage-lsu-students-busted-in
i can't wrap my head around the US limiting alcohol to 21 when everything else is 18 21 seems like such an arbitrary and...late age for access to something like alcohol
Among the confiscated alcoholic beverages were 106 18-packs of Natural Light beer, five 12-packs of Corona beer and five liters of Franzia boxed wine.
That should be a crime in and of itself.
Snip
i can't wrap my head around the US limiting alcohol to 21 when everything else is 18 21 seems like such an arbitrary and...late age for access to something like alcohol
True. I mean at eighteen I can buy a rifle or shotgun, but not alcohol. Not that I'd want to.
That should be a crime in and of itself.
There are definitely drinkable wines that come in boxes, but the other is definitely a crime.
boxed wine light beer and out of 106 bottles only several were either tequila, vodka, whiskey and rum and they call themselves a fraternity smh
boxed wine light beer and out of 106 bottles only several were either tequila, vodka, whiskey and rum and they call themselves a fraternity smh
That sounds exactly what a fraternity would have.
1800 beer cans? How many students were they planning on serving?!

I'm 19, and I'm in no particular rush to start drinking alcohol. Is gambling legal at 18 for you guys too?
That should be a crime in and of itself.
Natural light...like Natty? That stuff isn't worth the water its made with.

Making it illegal when they're first really exposed to it is a bad idea. I mean I drank a lot before I turned 21, and now that I'm past the drinking age I could care less about it. I mean I still drink a lot, but in different ways. Definitely safer ways.
only eight bottles of liquor? amateurs
Not shocking coming from LSU, it's party central there. Gulf Shores always has some form of college group with tons of alcohol, partyin'.
You can vote, drive, serve in the army, and have sex in America before you are considered old enough to have alcohol?
Why do frat houses always have such big windows? [sp]Because they love Natural Light[/sp]
You can vote, drive, serve in the army, and have sex in America before you are considered old enough to have alcohol?
You can die for your country but you can't have a drink.
i can't wrap my head around the US limiting alcohol to 21 when everything else is 18 21 seems like such an arbitrary and...late age for access to something like alcohol
Amen, I've been drinking since age 18 (excluding the customary glass of wine at home with dinners, which is legal from age 5 I might add) and have been enjoying all manner of concoctions since that time. I remember when we went to Vegas back in 2009 (at least I think it was that year) and my older sister wasn't able to drink despite being 19 at the time, so it was a rather dry Christmas vacation. Also I guess it was too much for the kid to be caught with some bottles of port. I mean, if you're going to be caught with alcohol under the legal age (still no idea why you can fuck at 18 but not drink until 21), you might as well be caught with something a little classier than Franzia. But hey, it's probably still better than Tesco own-brand gin.
i can't wrap my head around the US limiting alcohol to 21 when everything else is 18 21 seems like such an arbitrary and...late age for access to something like alcohol
For many states, it's a holdover from the prohibition era of the US. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._history_of_alcohol_minimum_purchase_age_by_state I think 19 would be ideal. No more 'underage' drinking in college while still preventing a majority of drinking in high school. Although individual states technically have a choice for who they let drink, the federal government holds some sway with the National Minimum Drinking Age Act.
you might as well be caught with something a little classier than Franzia. I know that there's a senator from my home state of Maryland pushing an amendment that would let service members of the Armed Forces drink at the age of 18. Thing is that it's less of a drinking age and more of a purchasing/possession age, and the reason that it's 21 everywhere in the United States is because the Federal Government uses federal highway funding as a tool to enforce it. To clarify, if your state does not have the age of 21 as the age to purchase alcohol you lose federal funding for highways. The drinking age however varies from state to state. For example in Maryland, you can drink alcohol on private property with the consent and supervision of your parents; "Alcohol may be possessed or consumed by an underage person in a private residence so long as it is furnished or allowed by a member of that person's immediate family (typically a parent)." It's still pretty arbitrary though. I'm drinking right now actually so hopeful this post isn't a hot mess.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Minimum_Drinking_Age_Act
Louisiana was 18 until the mid-90s, when the federal government threatened to withhold highway funding unless it was changed to 21. My parents told me stories where they'd drive from Minnesota to Wisconsin to drink, because the drinking age was lower in Wisconsin than in Minnesota. It's definitely a good thing to have it be the same across the country, but 21 is far too high. 18 or 19 would be ideal. Besides, nobody pays any attention to underage drinking laws anyways, I've been drinking since I was 15. I drink with my family pretty regularly, from beer to liquor, and I'm not 21. People just ignore it, it only really matters when you're purchasing alcohol.
the thing with gin is you can mix it with things to make it taste better. terrible hard alcohol is drinkable when it's mixed with juice/cola/tonic etc. shitty wine just tastes like sour anus.
Fair enough, although I've heard that Tesco gin is pretty rough no matter what you mix it with. Personally I'm more of a whiskey/rum chap on the spiritual front, though my go-to tipples are port and mead (yes we do have it over here), plus recently I've taken a liking to decent ciders.

When you're young you can handle it.

But I think my mates tend to use gin from the co-op or something, doesn't seem to taste like pure sin. The 21 drinking age of the US has always confused me a bit. Nobody is really going to play by that age, people at least sometimes stick to the 18 restriction over here. Sometimes.

I can't think of anything in the UK that's age restricted beyond 18.
Lottery at 16, casinos at 18. I can't think of anything in the UK that's age restricted beyond 18.
I think mortgages are.
That should be a crime in and of itself.
What's wrong with boxed wine? You do realize that a lot of expensive brands have offer them as well, right? Also, boxed wine stays fresh a minimum of four weeks, it’s shatter-proof, portable, will never have cork taint, and is more environmentally conscious.
Lottery at 16, casinos at 18. I can't think of anything in the UK that's age restricted beyond 18.
You can't drive trucks which is an issue that doesn't get enough attention in my opinion.
