A law enforcement officer was killed and another wounded in separate shooting incidents in Utah County Thursday afternoon, according to law enforcement and emergency officials. Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon said the episode began in Eagle Mountain at about 2 p.m., but he did not elaborate. Eagle Mountain Fire Chief Rand Andrus confirmed the fatality occurred on State Road 73 near Eagle Mountain and Cedar Fort. The second shooting, in which an officer was wounded, happened at the corner of Main and Center streets in Santaquin, a dispatcher said. The officer was transported to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, a sheriff's dispatcher said.
A member of the Juab County Sheriff's Office said a suspect was in custody in their county, where Interstate 15 was shut down in both directions between mile posts 222 and 216, about seven miles south of Nephi.
State Road 73 was closed west of Ranches Parkway and east of Eagle Mountain Boulevard, said Eagle Mountain city spokeswoman Linda Peterson. A school bus from Frontier Middle School was unable to complete its route; students have been returned to the school and are waiting for the road to reopen or for parents who are able to pick them up, Peterson said.
The Utah County Sheriff’s Office was planning a new conference at 5:30 p.m.
The Tribune will update this story as more information becomes available.
Suspect is still at large apparently.
EDIT:
I can see 10-15 firetrucks and police cars blocking the road down the street. Tons of commotion. It'll be a while before they open it up again.
