GameStop’s next step for preorder exclusives: Getting into a big game’s development process

The retailer recently sat down with investment company R.W. Baird to talk about the games industry’s present and future, and Baird analyst Colin Sebastian revealed that the brick-and-mortar chain wants to find ways to give customers more value when they preorder games. GameStop often offers special items and downloadable content when customers reserve big-name releases like Watch Dogs or Call of Duty, and that’s one of the reasons (along with its trade-in and rewards programs) that are helping it gain record market share for software sales on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. In an effort to deliver more attractive exclusives in the future, the company has confirmed to GamesBeat that it is looking to get involved early in the development process of big games — something it does not do now.

“[GamesStop] indicated that software publishers are more enthusiastic about partnering with it,” Sebastian wrote in his note to investors. “For example, by offering exclusive content on each major game release, and longer term, future models may include GameStop offering exclusive gameplay.”

“We are working with our [development] partners to build in a longer lead time,” GameStop public-relations spokesperson Jackie Smith told GamesBeat. “And we are working with them to get both physical and digital exclusives for our customers.”

Extra-Super-Limited Pre-Release Ultra-Rare edition comes with the actual computer chair used by the lead programmer! Cheeto stains and fart smell included!
Now you'll be able to see the blackmail to force in pre-order bonuses as a result of desperately trying to artificially create a reason to use retail brought on by the fear and reality of rapid obsolescence in today's marketplace in the gameplay!
Ugh. Fuck off with your pre-order nonsense.
Anybody that pre-orders is a fucking idiot for promoting this garbage.

Uh, there is nothing wrong about preordering for a game you really want
I preordered bf4 because I was really keen to play it and wasn't that much for me, am I fucking idiot? No of course not
Stop accusing consumers of being the problem because they aren't, accuse the corporate bastards for shovelling this shit

No its the customer for no respecting themselves and buying that rubbish.
If the "consumer" didn't buy the marked up, pre order packages the corporate bastards would realise people don't like what they are doing.
As long as something is profitable they will do it. Pre order nonsense is clearly profitable and they will continue.

It's not marked up. It's the price of a new game.
These Gamestop exclusive things are grade A horseshit. Preorder from us because we payed off the devs to get something off the disk you can only get from us.
I think the best thing is to incentivise people with access to content early that can be gotten later rather than this 'EXCLUSIVE' nonsense.
Gamestop is in desperate need of a competitor.
Well, please do as you wish but after this don't blame piracy for poor sales.
There's nothing inherently wrong with preorders. I pre-ordered Bioshock Infinite, and got the entirety of XCOM with it, which was like $50 at the time.
Anyway, what exactly do they mean by "Getting into the development process"? Are they talking about a closed beta?

Yes, i'm such an idiot for preordering games I like, especially when they have exclusive preorder content. Yes, it does suck that retailers do this bullshit, but they are going to do it whether I preorder or not. Oh, and midnight launches.
What happened to people preordering games because they wanted them as soon as possible and not just because it has some extra dlc? I also remember when Gamestop had their own stupid cover for Far Cry 3 preorders, so yeah I'd rather not have and partnerships with Gamestop

Ah then in that case frux was absolutely right. What they're doing is dickish. What the publishers/devs are doing is dickish also.
Thanks for correcting me

Sometimes they give out physical goodies instead of tucking away game content. I think Smash Bros. is giving out a coin if you pre-order with Best Buy?
wants to find ways to give customers more value when they preorder games
I've always hated this use of the word value. It's one of those sneaky way to say "We are charging a lot, but giving you more", but it feels like a rip off after you actually purchase.
Also, when I am shopping for a blood soaked murder simulator, I'm looking for "value".
wasn't BF4 broken as hell on release? something you could have avoided by just not preordering and waiting for reviews?
also if no one bought into gay preorder shit then corporate bastards would stop doing it
MP servers crashed every 30 minutes but the game from my knowledge ran at 60FPS constantly on max settings
also if no one bought into gay preorder shit then corporate bastards would stop doing it
True but that's not going to happen. Millions of gamers are not just going to stop preordering games.
You shouldn't stop consumers from pre-ordering games or else the issue with going to a mid night release or next day release, getting there to only find out the game has been completely sold out will arise again
pre ordering gurantees you a spot, I don't see a problem with it, I just see a problem with companies shovelling DLC exclusives that encourage people to pre order when most want to buy it later on
It's complex but yeah
Any developers using the DLC excuse of "we didn't have time to finish it for the final release so we'll release as DLC" shouldn't also offer exclusive content in schemes like this.
"we are going to sell you content we had to cut out of the game because we didn't have time to fit it in. Oh yeah buy from gamestop, they have exclusive content which stopped us from putting that DLC content in the original!"

There's no real incentive to pre-order a digital game, because there's infinite copies of it. companies just want you to buy it at full price before it's released maybe so they can book revenue early.
I've kinda wondered why they want you to pre-order so badly. I guess it so people can't say anything negative about it before you buy it.

Yep I'm a fucking horrible person because I preorder games I want.
You act like flying a blimp in GTAV is going to get me to buy it if I was on the edge of "yes" or "no."

also if no one bought into gay preorder shit then corporate bastards would stop doing it
Good luck getting EVERYONE to stop. Seriously, there is no harm in fucking pre-ordering a game you want. Does this mean the game is good by default? No, but that's the risk one takes with pre-orders.
Which is usually why I don't pre-order anymore. Last title I did that with was Assassin's Creed 3 and I regretted it. Still though, stop playing the fucking blame game please. Blaming consumers is not going to stop the pre order/day 1 DLC bullshit. They have money, and it is their right to spend it how they choose. You, nor I, nor anyone else on this forum has the right to tell them how to spend their money.
The only way to fix this is to make companies LISTEN to their customers....which is impossible cause most if not all of them listen exclusively to money.

That's more Ubisoft's thing. They have covers for other editions, like Walmart and Target.
What about non-american gamers? fuck gamestop in the ass

Personally I just want to preorder GTA V is because I've been waiting to play it on my PC for a long time and I know that I'm going to have to deal with it if its a bad port because I won't play it on anything else.
I don't know why they have to get in bed with Gamestop. The retail market is diverse enough that even if Gamestop disappeared, yoy could still buy video games. There's Hastings, Walmart, Bestbuy, independent game shops, Amazon, etc..
Gamestop be like "HEY EA, IF YOU DON'T MAKE EXCLUSIVE PRE-ORDER BONUS, WE WON'T CARRY BATTLEFIELD 5." But if your town has a Gamestop in it, there are probably plenty of other electronic/entertainment places where you can buy games.

If there was ever an example for why you should never ever preorder games though its Battlefield 4. I won't call you an idiot but that should have been an eye opener atleast.

This game had some kind of exclusive distribution deal with Gamestop, you know what they did? They sat on a ton of copies to make some kind of artificial rarity then sold those copies later at a way inflated price because they're "rare". Also they opened them and sold them as used so they could get all the profit. Gamestop is scum and they should be kept as far away from devs as possible.
I thought everyone learned their lesson with preorders when that Aliens game came out
The only reason to preorder a game is if you have faith in the developer/publisher to not release a shitty half-finished product, or if it's already out in some form and you're willing to buy it as-is
